I'm an ordinary healer now and an ambassador to my empire.
When my kingdom fell to the empire I turned to another force, strong enough to fight it. It's in a completely different country though, that I found a place I could call home. Although the peace was hard-earned as the empire had sunken its claws into this place as well. It was ultimately, it's downfall.
My husband is from my home country and has seen his share of war. Fought and bled his part. He's weary now. Once a soldier, he works as a bodyguard now. He protects wandering mercents and the like. Though he's tired of fighting, all he's ever known is how to swing a sword, how to kill and to fight to survive.
What brought me to the land we came to love and call home is my work as a spy. Before that, I aided the army of my home country as battle healer, a white mage amidst the troops. Being right behind the front line, aiding the soldiers with healing and supportive spells to keep them going. So they could keep fighting. I've seen my share of blood, violence and death, too.
My husband joined forces with the neighboring country early on, as many others did, when it was already clear, that the war was about to be lost. Over there they thought they might stop the empire before it could devour another country in its endless greed. Some blame them for not fighting until the end. I might have, too, but I saw what happened to those who stayed to make a final stand. I'm glad they turned away in time. I was there until the end and I will carry the memory and the scar until the day I die.
My land was torn and my heart broken but my will to fight kept me whole, at least for a while. I lend my aid to a different empire, hardly any less hungry for power. But they had the forces and the will to take on the warring country. As there was no deceleration of war yet, they had little need for a battle healer. So they found me another field of expertise. They trained me to be a spy and I daresay I turned into a masterful eyes and ears.
They sent me, however, not to the rivaling empire, no. I was to leave to a small kingdom, caught between the two empires, struggling to keep its freedom. This is where I was reunited with my husband, though even he couldn't know about my job. I was tasked to keep an eye on how things would unfold.
Later on, I was spying on their resistance forces. So the country I allied with would at all times, know of the things hatching and unfolding. Because the kingdoms independence or lack thereof was the final line, the empire needed to cross for the two big countries to clash in a devasting war. And though the empire I pledged my allegiance to, was power hungry, too, it was still hesitant to declare war, waiting for the other country to overstep a boundary.
When the eldest son, one of two of the kings former four children, declared himself ruler, after his father died rather mysteriously, war was imminent. The young man was ever so ambitious and hungry to prove himself. He announced the war had to be fought out of necessity.
War broke out and was only stopped by the downfall of the new rulers flagairship that took him with it. It had been an atrocity clouding the sky and rightfully became his grave. His biggest ambition caused his failure and his death. With him gone, his younger brother, still a boy, took over. He had the wisdom the powerful rulers, all grown man and ready to call themselves wise, did not. His words were of peace and unity and freedom. Though still very young, he held the support of royal members of all neighboring countries. The new ruler fought for peace and earned it. This was the end of the war, at last.
There's still so much healing to be done, so much to rebuild. But for once, people are working together and though at times the memories are still hard to face, I see hope in peoples faces. Which in turn gives me hope and strength. Maybe one day my husband and I will be strong enough to return to our country, to rebuild it. But for now, this small kingdom we're living in is all the home we need.
