Tanaris

Tanaris used to be a lush jungle and the territory of the trolls of the Gurubashi Empire. When the Great Sundering shattered the ancient landmass, the area swiftly became a sprawling desert. The Farraki tribe of trolls was thus stranded here, but eventually adapted to their harsh new environment and managed to survive.

Nozdormu, the great bronze dragon of time, has made this land his home, thriving in the solitude of oppressive heat and miles of sand. Those of his brood have been tasked with guarding the mysterious Caverns of Time, a chaotic and terrifying labyrinth that winds deep below Azeroth's surface. Adventures foolhardy enough to enter this area rarely return unchanged.

The titans also have a holding in Tanaris in the form of an entrance to the ancient land of Uldum, which was once guarded by elite earthen giants in the Valley of the Watchers. The grand passageway and gigantic stone doors have long since been shattered, however, and are completely inaccessible. Brave archaeologists occasionally dig for hidden relics in the rubble surrounding the area.

The silithid burrow their underground hives all over southern Kalimdor, and Tanaris is no exception. Two hives have been charted amidst the dunes, and individual silithid have been spotted at water posts throughout Tanaris. The silithid sometimes prove impartial to travelers, but will defend their territory ferociously against invaders.

Gadgetzan is the capital city of both Tanaris and the Steamwheedle Goblin Cartel. The goblins believe in profit above loyalty, thus Gadgetzan is considered neutral territory in any Horde-Alliance conflict. Anyone with a fat wallet or services to offer is welcomed here. During the Cataclysm, the ocean flooded in close to the town, turning the area outside the eastern wall into beach-front property and obliterating the nearby Steamwheedle Port, whose survivors moved into the city. While an apocalyptic result for some, it came as a fruitful opportunity for Gadgetzan as a whole, turning the city into an important neutral port.
