They swim through the aether, their many tongues flicking out to taste the void, their many eyes closed to remember and open to see. Searching, searching, searching, searching for familiarity.

They must come from somewhere. All beings do. But where? They must find a place that is known to them.

They must.

And yet—

There is something recognized in the taste of the molecules of the oort cloud they just passed through. Something known, as keenly as a child’s first blanket, in the swing of the moon’s orbit around that latest planet. Every distant sun has a shine they are sure they remember, every gap between the stars seems to sing of home.

So on they go, twisting and tasting their way through a familiar universe. It aches, this familiarity, when even the void itself feels like it must be home, but they know the pain now. It is as familiar as everything else in this universe.

It smells/tastes/looks/feels/sings of home. Home, home, home! Their cells hum with the might of the memories, so near to the surface yet perpetually out of reach. Close and yet gone forever. All that they can hope to try to find it is to scour every speck of stardust, every planetary ring and stray moon in the hope that eventually one will lead to home. And yet in their search, nothing seems a stranger—it is all familiar. It all feels so painfully homelike.

They writhe in mourning for a moment—one tail smashing through a nearby planetoid, another devouring half an asteroid belt in a desperate gulp, while the being’s screams cause the two nearest stars to flare and planets to wobbles on their axis—before twisting in on themselves and swooping off to the next system to continue the endless search.
