Cairo was born on September 10th, 2008 - just four days after our wedding. We met Cairo as a tiny newborn, and it was love at first site.
From the moment we met Cairo, we knew she was something special. Even as a small kitten, she was smart and mischievous. As soon as we had her home, we began to harness train her - and she took to it right away! Soon she was begging to go on walks, and she learned the sound of her harness and leash coming down from a peg by the door. We decided to give clicker training a try, and soon Cairo knew many commands - everything from a simple 'sit' to a sharp "leave it!" when she tried to eat something she wasn't supposed to.
But her intelligence didn't stop just with training. We quickly learned that Cairo was ridiculously clever. She would open a drawer just enough to stick he arm inside and use her paw like a scoop to fish up whatever she wanted! She figured out how to open the bread box, and soon she was eating her way through loaves of breads and bags of tortillas. She'd tip over the garbage to wrestle out an empty bag of cheese or a leftover cup of ice cream - and proudly bring her "kill" to us afterwards. We learned to Cairo-proof: we found a bread box with a magnetic lock, we got drawers she could not open, and we put a cast iron skillet on top of the garbage can - until we found one with a lid that Cairo couldn't open!
Cairo also became a connoisseur of many things besides cat food. Cheese crackers? Delicious! Canned green beans? The best! How many cats can say they received a crepe for their birthday? Well, Cairo did (don't worry - she didn't get to eat the whole thing).
Cairo's love of her leash and harness have allowed her to go on many adventures - from hiking in the Pacific Northwest to ferry rides, from farmers markets to chilly beaches to walks along Bellingham Bay. Her trusty stroller comes along in case she gets tired of walking - but she's always happy to stick her head out and greet people that come to say hi to her.
These days, Cairo is a little old lady who spends most of her time napping. She won't turn down a good play session with a peacock feather, however, or a good brushing, and she still loves to get in her stroller and greet her adoring fans.
update 5/5/24:
At the end of February 2024, Cairo had what we thought was a terrible flare-up of her IBD (which she's had for years). An ultrasound revealed she had, to quote, "terrible pancreatitis". She was hospitalized for nearly a week on IV fluids and a lot of supportive care. Her labwork was a mess, showing anemia, a severe electrolyte imbalance, and a huge amount of immature white blood cells from severe inflammation. We were able to get a small sample of cells from her pancreas at a repeat ultrasound to send away for cytology. It came back with a devastating diagnosis: pancreatic adenocarcinoma.
We took Cairo home from the hospital on what we believed would be palliative care, determined to make her last few weeks as happy as possible. She went to get crepes, went on nature walks, ate chicken tenders, and received a lot of love and support. However, something amazing happened. Cairo was not just responding to palliative care - she was doing amazing on it. She began to eat better and get stronger. She started acting like her old self. Her 3-week recheck labwork came back completely normal. Finally, she had a recheck ultrasound -- which showed a completely normal, happy, healthy pancreas.
I was at home recovering from surgery while Cairo had her recheck, and I received one of the best texts I've ever gotten: Cairo's doctors and the radiologist all believed that she did not have cancer. The severe inflammation from her pancreas caused her cytology to come back as false-positive for adenocarcinoma.
She will require frequent rechecks of her pancreas via ultrasound, her steroid doses have been raised permanently, and she'll need recheck exams and labwork every 3 months. But she is off nearly all her supportive medication and is absolutely thriving.
My sweet, beautiful old lady - what a miracle you are ♥️
