It had been a long, dark, painful time for the girl, with all the surgeries after the accident and the knowledge she'd never look the same again...never look...normal. A drunk driver had forced her to swerve into the other lane where a truck hauling some sort of caustic chemical couldn't get out of the way in time. By the time rescuers got her out of the mangled wreck, the chemical had gotten pretty much everywhere on her body. Now she couldn't stand the sight of herself. Her skin had a green tint and her features were...well, they did not look at all like the pretty, young girl she used to be.

She wasn't sure what to do with her life. Before, she'd had dreams of getting married and having an amazing job and maybe even living in the city in a fancy loft with fancy friends and parties. But now...who'd want to marry a girl that looked like her? Her future would never be what she dreamed it to be. Her only real friend now was her cat, who didn't care what she looked like as long as the food was in his bowl at the right time and head scratches were handed out on demand. He loved her unconditionally and she him. But she still longed for something more.

One day, she was sitting at home, where she normally was, reading her news feed. She was sad when she noticed the candy store downtown was going out of business. It looked like the owners were trying to sell the business because they wanted to retire. It was especially sad because the little shop had been right across the street from the hospital where she'd spent so many days recovering. The candy deliveries twice a week had been a real treat - one of the only things that made her and the other patients smile. She sighed and looked out the window. It was too bad no one wanted to take over the shop. The price wasn't even high and it was small, so one person could even run it on their own. One person...like her. No...she couldn't do that...could she? Should she?

An hour later, she'd secured enough of her savings from her bank to buy the shop outright and she was headed determinedly down the street towards the shop, hooded cape pulled low to obscure her disfigurement. She would buy this shop and she would run it herself, continuing the twice-weekly deliveries to the hospital. Maybe she couldn't have her old dreams, but she could make sure someone else was happy at least. And who knew, maybe she'd find new dreams along the way.
