The Calcium in our teeth,
The Iron in our blood,
The Carbon in our apple pies,
Were made in the interior
of collapsing stars.
We are made of STAR STUFF."
-Carl Sagan
The sky is infinitely huge and infinitely beautiful. One cannot help but think, if our sky here on Subeta is so vast, what about the skies on other planets? Are they as blue and as bright? And the stars, sparkling in the blackest night, bring a sense of wonder like nothing else. What worlds rotate around those stars, as Subeta does around ours? Are there others out there, asking the same questions? Thinking the same thoughts about the beauty and ever-changing vastness of the universe? It is a wonder that life evolved in such a violent, wild place. From the tiniest particle to the frighteningly massive black hole, there is so much to see in the vacuum of space. Stars, planets, moons, black holes, nebulae, dark matter...there is ever so much to learn about and be fascinated by. One could study an entire lifetime and never know a parsec of the immenseness of the universe.
Did you know?
Space is completely silent, since sound waves need a medium to travel through and there is no atmosphere in space.
There are an unknowable number of stars in the known universe - an Australian National University study estimated the number to be 70 sextillion (that's 70,000 million million million).
The Apollo astronauts' footprints will most likely stay on the moon for at least 100 million years because there is no wind or water to erode them away.
99% of our solar system's mass is contained in the sun. More energy from the sun hits the earth every hour than our planet can use in a whole year.
A single day on the planet Venus is longer than an entire year back on Earth.
There may actually be a planet made out of diamonds - 55 Cancri e has a radius twice that of the Earth, a mass 8 times greater, and is 40 light years away in the constellation of Cancer.
A fully kitted-out NASA space suit costs $12,000,000 (70% of this is the backpack and control module).
The moon may at one time have been a piece of the Earth.
There is a volcano on Mars that is three times the size of Mount Everest.
Kepler is named after 17th century German astronomer, mathematician, and astrologer Johannes Kepler, who discovered the laws of planetary motion, along with the Danish astronomer Tycho Brahe. He was a key figure in the scientific revolution of the 17th century.
