Inspiration: Polish chemist and physicist Marie Skłodowska (better known by her married name, Marie Curie)
An accomplished scientist specializing in nuclear medicine, Dr. Astatine, M.D., is employed in the research laboratory of her good friend Dr. Ian Asmodeus. She is best friends with her minion Salomea and Asmodeus’ own pet, a Rreign named Curie. Astatine is a widow and workaholic, but both her work and her hobbies show how much she cares for others. Her keenest interest is in various fields of science, most notably medicine and the applications of radioactive materials to make new treatments. Her namesake, the element Astatine, is a chemical used in treating cancer.
Outside of work, Asta’s hobbies lean toward the cerebral. Her favorite pastime is reading aloud or telling stories to children. She also loves to volunteer at Charity’s food bank; Astatine is no housewife, but she does cook a delicious stew! Her closest friend from these hobbies is the timid young Valrhona, just barely into adulthood. Astatine thinks of Val almost like a daughter, and tries her hardest to encourage Valrhona to dream big, and to face her fears and never let anything control her. Thanks to Astatine’s friendship and counsel, Val is embarking on her life’s newest journey with much more aplomb than anyone expected.
Minion: Salomea, the Siance. Salomea is Astatine’s pet rat as well as her research assistant. Salomea was rescued from a lab where she was a subject for inhumane experiments, one of which caused her to develop a serious illness. Astatine adopted the sickly and dying rat from a sanctuary as she was looking for a pet with special needs; she had the money and the space in her heart to care for one, and not everybody can.
To the rejoicing of all, however, Astatine’s brilliance led her to discover a way to cure Salomea. Now the little rat is healthy again, and loves helping Asta around the lab. Salomea even has her own little hazard suit to protect her from some of the more harmful experiments! Ian Asmodeus is quite charmed by both Salomea’s story of triumph and survival, as well as Astatine’s genius, her driven nature, and her very important goal. It’s why he’s devoted a small section of his lab to housing a medical doctor’s R&D; it’s not his field, but even he can see that Astatine shows promise.
