In this madness
I reach out for your hand
Two souls in union,
spiralling to the ground

Have you ever wondered why there are dreams? Have you ever asked yourself why you suddenly wake up, especially from a nightmare? Well, it's dream guardians that are responsible for all that. To be exact though they aren't only around for these things - dream guardians also serve as companions and advisors for those that secretly wish for it, be it. They say that there's always a dream guardian watching over you while you are sleeping, invisible most of the time but definitely present and ready to protect you. If one of them physically shows up in a dream he or she can take any form or shape, always fulfilling the secret wish of the person they are currently "visiting".

Morpheus is one of these guardians, the first and oldest of them to be exactly but there has been a time where he wasn't able to remember that. The reason for this was Claudius, a man who got mocked for being physically disabled and who was even seen as a freak of nature by most members his own family. Morpheus was around him in his dreams since his early childhood, always trying to give him some comfort until, in AD19, a horrible incident changed everything from bad to worse. Germanicus, the beloved older brother of Claudius, died unexpectedly and although Claudius outwardly didn't show any deeper signs of grief he was more than heartbroken. At that time Morpheus felt that it wasn't enough to accompany this mortal in his dreams and so he decided to follow him into his reality. It took him some time to convince those above him but finally, on condition that he wouldn't know who he truly was anymore, he was sent to earth and his life as a human began.

In 20AD Morpheus was born under the name Lucius Valerius Messalla, being the son of Marcus Valerius Messalla Corvinus and his wife who died in childbed. He also had a twin brother who was two hours older than him but he was weak and sickly right from the day of his birth and didn't even survive his first birthday. Lucius's father often was away from home because of his job in the Roman military and so the boy spent the time of his childhood mostly in the house of his maternal grandparents who took good care of him and also made sure that he received proper education. Later, when Marcus not only became Praetorian prefect but also the ever-present shadow of Roman emperor Caligula, his son was allowed to join his father.

From this day on he lived in the palace where he also met Claudius again, the actual reason for his existence in this world. Although both of course had no idea about Lucius's true identity and although there was an age gap of about thirty years between them they got along very well right from the beginning. Thanks to Claudius the young boy Lucius also was able to learn more about history, what was his biggest interest since his early childhood. Unlike his father, who tried his best to hide his Germanic origin, Lucius not only showed interest in the history of his tribe, he even more and more felt that he wasn't ashamed but proud of partly being a Cheruscan.

Apart from that, again differing from the ideals of his father, he didn't care at all for a career in the military and when he was sent there nonetheless in 38AD he showed that he was capable of acting radical if he wanted to achieve something. Right on his first day he managed to fall from his horses' back and to break his right leg in a way that he walked with a slight limp for the rest of his life. Needless to say that his first day in the military also was his last. Now his father wasn't happy about that of course but in the end he gave in and allowed his son to choose his profession by himself - a few weeks later Lucius started to study rhetoric. By doing that he was able to start a career as a lawyer what he did until he became a senator. Besides that he always continued to learn as much as possible about history what even brought him to write own books some time later.

When Caligula was assassinated in January 41, what also caused the death of his Praetorian prefect Marcus short after, Lucius was sad but not devastated. Although he loved his father dearly he was rational enough to realize that it probably was the best outcome since Marcus's life had ended with the death of his beloved emperor anyways. The only consequence that the event had for Lucius himself was that he finally decided to leave the palace in order to move into an own house, his contact to Caligula's successor Claudius nonetheless never broke up. Over time the two men often met in private, took long walks and talked about their shared hobby history. During these years he also became good friends with two other men, one of them being a poet named Catullus. Although their lives actually were so very different the two men quickly formed a close bond and soon enough they saw each other as soulmates.

Because of his connection to the palace and its inhabitants Lucius also witnessed a lot of things that happened around Claudius and his family. Many of these things, like acts of adultery or conspiracies, made the young man shake his head but he knew that he wasn't in the position to intervene. Therefore he at least tried to turn the hours that he spent with Claudius into hours that the emperor could enjoy to the fullest, something that he luckily was able to do thanks to his humor, his intelligence and his rhetorical talent. Thanks to that he was a common guest in the palace but, lucky for him, he never aroused too much attention either and so no one tried to do him any harm after the mysterious death of Claudius in the year 54AD.

Lucius never entered the palace from this day on, he just went on with his daily life however always with the numb feeling that there was something missing - his dear friend that he had lost and that he couldn't protect thanks to the path he had chosen years ago. In the dark hours where he grieved for his loss he wished that he could turn back time in order to fulfill the request of his father by becoming a member of the Roman military. By doing that, he was sure now, he could have reached a more powerful position within the Roman empire and maybe would have been able to save the life of Claudius. Unfortunately it was far too late for this insight and so Lucius had to live with this, maybe unnecessary but nonetheless daily present, feeling of guilt and remorse.

Untypical for the time he lived in he never got married. In fact he was known amongst women for obviously being immune to any kind of sexual attraction and, to make it even more bizarre for his contemporaries, he also showed no particular interest in any kind of Roman amusement except for his regular get-togethers with his old friend Catullus. When they were together they always had a reason to laugh, even if it was about the most trivial things. Lucius enjoyed listening to Catullus's poems and when they were able to afford it the two men even went on vacation together. When he, after being in rather frail health for a few years already, died of pneumonia in 66AD it was a lonely death for his beloved soulmate had died shortly before. The only person around him during his last days and hours was his loyal servant Caenis who stayed with him until the end and who also took care of his burial.

Nearly 2,000 years have passed since these events. Lucius is the dream guardian Morpheus again, always busy with guarding the dreamers. The time that he spent in Rome however he will never forget...
