Your heart is pounding against your chest as you walk through the doors of the Great Hall. You've heard about how breathtaking it is to behold but you're much too nervous and excited to appreciate its grandeur.

All of the older students are already seated and they watch as you and the other first years walk to the head of the hall and cluster around Professor McGonagall. You glance across at the boy standing next to you who's face has a greenish tinge to it. You fleetingly wonder whether he will throw up before taking a step to the side. As you remember the butterflies fluttering around your own stomach, you take a deep breath in an attempt to calm your nerves.

Before you on a stool sits the well worn sorting hat which will determine which house you'll be in. After a few brief words from the head master, Professor Dumbledore, the hat breaks into song. You barely register what the hat is saying and all too soon its song has come to an end.

Professor McGonagall produces a piece of parchment containing a list of the names of your year group. Clearing her throat and adjusting her spectacles, she reads the name of the first student to be sorted. You watch as a timid looking girl with dark blonde hair and grey eyes steps forward. The hat is placed upon her head and almost immediately it shouts "Hufflepuff!". Loud cheers and applause erupt from what you assume is the Hufflepuff table as the girl climbs down from the stool and hurries to join them.

More names are called and students sorted into their houses. Professor McGonagall then reads out your name and you step forward to sit on the stool. As the hat is placed on your head you wonder how it will know which house you belong in and whether it will ask you any questions ...

Hufflepuff is the most inclusive among the four houses; valuing hard work, patience, loyalty, and fair play rather than a particular aptitude in its members. The house was founded by Helga Hufflepuff, its emblematic animal is the badger and its house ghost is the Fat Friar. Hufflepuffs are known to be friendly, honest and rather impartial. It may be that due to their values, Hufflepuffs are not as competitive as the other houses, or are more modest about their accomplishments.

Hufflepuff appears to have the least rivalry with the other houses, except in Quidditch. Hufflepuff has produced the fewest number of dark wizards than any other house at Hogwarts. Their cheerful and friendly demenor can probably account for this property of the House.

They can also be short-tempered. Gryffindors and Slytherins have shared a fierce house rivalry since their founders, Godric Gryffindor and Salazar Slytherin, had a severe falling out over Slytherin's emphasis on blood purity. The houses of Ravenclaw and Hufflepuff tended to side with Gryffindor in its rivalry with Slytherin. This was particularly notable during the Second Wizarding War and during the Battle of Hogwarts.

The house was founded by Salazar Slytherin, its emblematic animal is the serpent and the house ghost is the Bloody Baron. The majority of Slytherin students are pure-bloods.

Slytherin house has a negative reputation, with many claiming that it is the source of most Dark Wizards in Britain, notably Tom Marvolo Riddle who later became Lord Voldemort, as well as a large majority of his Death Eaters. It has a traditional rivalry with Gryffindor.
