Helix has a minion!
Tempus the Sirius
Moren slammed his fists down hard on the table. He roared, "Bring me the knight Helix. NOW!!" The other knights cowered a little. They knew better than to fail their lord. And failed they had. Each of them wondered who would take the blame. Helix arrived, and bowed before his lord. "Good evening sire, how may I serve you?"
Moren snorted and glared around the room. "These fools claim to serve me also. But do they carry out my wishes?! No, they are imbeciles. Useless scrag-ends!"Helix glanced around the room, and saw the fear on their faces. Moren said "I want you to carry out the following orders. Go and find the Book of Hak and bring it me. It is a simple request, is it not? Yet these fools failed to even locate the whereabouts of the Book! Find it, and bring it to me."
He handed Helix a parchment, containing rough details of the cave where it was believed the Book was kept. This was the moment Helix had been waiting for.Helix nodded and turned on his heels. He knew what was expected of him. What no-one knew was how he would complete the task. The Book of Hak was a sacred book, many had tried to steal it and all had failed. It was said to hold many secrets, and it was said the first person to read its pages would become the most powerful being in the land. It was said there was a three-headed dog guarding the precious Book, but Helix snorted at the very thought. Rumours are a dangerous thing.
Hurrying to his room in the castle, and making quite sure he was alone, Helix took the key from his belt and unlocked the small silver box hidden behind the books adorning the shelf. Inside the box was a crystal. It was a Helix Crystal, given to him by the Eumenides, many years ago. Its power granted Helix the ability to travel through space and time, to any world, and assume the character of anyone he wished. For now, he was a knight. When his mission was complete, he would leave as mysteriously as he had arrived. And no-one would ever find him.
Hiding the crystal safe in the pocket of his gambaison, he left the castle on horseback. As soon as he was far enough away not to be seen, he dismounted and held the crystal in his hand. Helix gave the command. "Take me to the cave of Odin"He closed his eyes, and when they opened he was at the edge of a forest. A few steps to the left, and he could see the cave a little way in front of him, partially hidden by some overgrown bushes. Helix drew his sword and entered.
Helix let his eyes adjust to the darkness and slowly moved forward. It wasn't long before he heard snarling, and the sound of metal scraping the ground. As he approached, he came upon a deformed animal, possibly a dog of some sort. It was chained to a large rock, and Helix quickly decided the chain was long enough for the creature to block his way through.. Helix used his vast knowledge and skill to help him dodge the creature's lunges several times, and managed to thrust his sword into the creature's back. As the creature lay dying, Helix scoured the walls, and saw the Book of Hak, wrapped in brown paper in a large crevice in the wall. He tucked it inside his clothing, and left the cave.
Once outside he used his crystal to return to his home. Taxia was where Helix had grown up, where he had been prepared for the life he faced. Returning to his home, he placed the Book of Hak in a prepared glass cabinet, along with all the other treasures he had rescued throughout the centuries. The Holy Grail, Herihor's tomb, the treasures of Lima and the Ark of the Covenant, to name but a few. That room held so many priceless relics, a testament to the work Helix had done. It was only one of many such rooms.
Shedding his knight's clothing, Helix felt good to be back to normal again. He smiled to himself, knowing how angry his lord would be when he failed to return. He had gained Moren's trust as a knight through performing other simpler, smaller tasks. This was part of the ruse. And as usual, it had worked perfectly.
Of course he knew many more tasks lay ahead, many more priceless treasures to be rescued and preserved - kept safe from those who did not deserve to own them. Some may view Helix as a thief, others as a time traveller, protector of relics. Whatever you may think of him, Helix had completed his tasks and the relics he retrieved would be safe in his hands, forever. For now, Helix could relax. He returned his crystal to its small regeneration chamber, ready for the next 'time'.
