It was a perfect morning in Peka Glade (well, to be fair, every morning in Peka Glade was perfect). The sun was shining, the air was fresh, and the dew droplets all reflected from every tiny blade of grass. There was however, just one slight problem; the humans. Oh, how they rushed back and forth to fill their pitchers with the magical water! Calla never quite understood what was so special about it. She drank that water everyday and never felt any different.

She hid in her favorite spot, a hollowed out log, watching the strangers tromp past her one way and then tromp past her the other way. She often thought of jumping out in front of one of the humans and surprising them, perhaps tripping them and making them spill their precious water. She knew she would never really do that, secretly she knew the humans were bigger and stronger than her. They might get mad and hurt her! Or worse! Grab her and decide to bring her home, forever taking her away from her precious glade, her best friend Verde, and all the majestical butterflies!!

The humans would never know of beautiful hoard that fluttered around the glade. While they rushed back and forth, the butterflies were scared away. Calla spent most of her young life honing her hunting skills, in hopes of catching one of those butterflies some day. And then what would she do with it? Well, that thought never quite occurred to her.

Once the noisy train of humans had ceased for the morning, the glade became eerily silent. Calla slowly crawled out of her log, stretching her legs from the tops of her shoulders to the tips of her paws. She knew right where they hid and watched, stalking their favorite willow tree. This was probably the most thrilling part of the day for her. Gradually, all the animals came out of hiding and little by little the glade sprang back to life. Suddenly a colorful swarm rose from cover. "Butterflies!!" Calla thought to herself! She rushed and pounced as they madly scattered away from her. For hours upon hours, she jumped and dashed and sprang and ambushed and attacked. Her efforts my be fruitless, but what could possibly bring her more joy?

She was taking a break, when a thought occurred to her. "There are so many of them and only one of me! I need someone to help! I'm sure Verde would love to come help me! Now where could that kora have gone?" she wondered. She wandered through the crevices and corners of the glade where she knew Verde liked to hide. Then she spotted four little tails hovering slightly above the grass. "Gotcha!" she thought to herself. Quicker than lightning she pounced upon the kora. Calla was flying so fast once she landed on Verde, she bounced off and went rolling through the grass. Verde was supposed to roll with her, but the kora was laying too low and it didn't quite work out the way she planned.

She got up, shook herself off, and sauntered back to Verde.

"Whatcha doing?"

"Hmmm" replied Verde, who was never much for talking.

"Guess what I'm doing? I'm catching butterflies!"

"Ummhmm" she said, drowning her nose in a book.

"You can come help if you aren't busy!"

"Hmmm" she says once again.

"Okey dokey! Maybe later!" and Calla dashed off, missing her butterflies already. What a strange creature that kora was. How could anything be more exciting than catching butterflies!? Especially a book, those silly things don't even do anything. For the rest of the day, Calla spent frolicking with all the gorgeous butterflies in the glade. Just when she thought she was about to catch one, another bigger and seemingly more magnificent one would catch her eye, and she'd tear of running after it. And so it went until the dark began to descend upon the glade and Calla knew the humans would come again.

That was okay, because she was so tired by then, she didn't think she had much strength left in her. Disappointed and sad to leave all her butterflies behind, Calla trotted far back into a small cavern in the glade, farther then she knew the humans would ever go. Once she curled up and lay down, she realized just how tired she was. Right as her eyelids were about to blink out the last of the light of the day, she saw her favorite blue butterfly float down to rest on the tip of her nose, as she did every night. "Good night, Aurora." she whispered as she fell soundly asleep.
