I wake, slowly, to a pink and gold, ghostlike image buzzing in front of me, teasingly, until it faded, as always, with the sinking sun. I stretched lazily; the days seem to stretch on as end of summer comes. Not that I'm complaining or anything. I yawn, then rise weightlessly into the night and wonder how much longer I have to wait. Every day I dream of meeting that fuzzy shape I glimpse just after sunset...

I glance over my galactic markings, and can't help but wonder what her sun colours will be like. The Galactic Ruffies are always similar; blue and grey, with unique golden patterns and markings. But the Sun Ruffies colourings vary from whites or pinks, golds or purples... If the colour can be seen in a sunset or rise, it could be found on a Ruffie. I'm pretty sure she's mainly pink from the glimpse I get as I wake each evening, but my view is clouded by the Rainbow Vortex which separates us.

We were born to guard the skies, make sure everything runs smoothly every day. It's clever really; we don't have a choice but to do our jobs or we will never achieve our dreams of exploring the universe. I watch the night, and she watches the day. But as the Ruffies say, opposites do attract and I can't wait till our eclipse happens and we are freed from this isolation. Because with every eclipse, it is decided whether or not we have worked hard enough to earn our place in the Ruffie family. If we have, we meet in the space between the sun and moon, called the Rainbow Vortex. Two new Ruffie pups are selected, one Galactic, one Sun, and we are free to go wherever we like. I think I'd like to explore, maybe meet up with our families, and reunite with old friends. One day, we might even have puppies of our own to teach about the universe until it's their turn to look after it. Each Galactic would have my minion to take with them, each Sun would have hers.
I wish I knew her name. Calling her 'her' seems a bit disrespectful, seeing as we're meant to like each other and everything. I've never heard of pairs not getting on, but anything that goes wrong does tend to get covered up quite well by the older Ruffies... I remember my dad telling me about when he forgot to put the moon up one night; luckily for him, mum saw the funny side. I hope I never make a mistake, what if my Sun Ruffie decided she didn't like me?
I breathe out, stars tumbling out my mouth, sending a firework display across the night sky. I wave to them, and they twinkle back at me as they swiftly sizzle into their places. I've always been tempted to rearrange them, just for a laugh, confuse them as they dance about lost; but what if she didn't like my tricks, what if I never got my eclipse then? Suddenly, a rainbow coloured spark flew past my ear, interrupting my thoughts. "Was that a firework? Like, a real life firework?!" I ask Watching, my minion. "I didn't realise they went this high! What stupid ideas are the humans coming up with now, setting off fireworks in space? Don't they know they could hit one of us?" I look around me. "Watching?" I call; but he's not here. That's strange... He's never late; he wouldn't miss when I put the stars out unless it was important. He's always loved the way they shuffle around before settling into their places. Something must have come up. Oh well.
I brush off a second rainbow coloured spark that'd landed on my nose; what's going on down there? The air has a slight spectrum glitter to it, I notice, as more and more of those sparks fly past me. Settling comfortably ready to guard the skies, I wonder once more what's happened to my minion. I thought the only time they were allowed leave us was when it was eclipse night... The sky has a strange feeling tonight; I hope he's okay, wherever he is.

As the night draws to an end, the moon starts to unwind. He's going back to bed, and trying to take me too, but tonight, my curiosity makes me struggle to keep my eyes open. A brilliant golden light fills the scene and I bark in excitement as I get a stronger than ever glimpse of her. Pure white wings on a pink and orange, furry shape. She turns her head slightly towards me just before my eyes flicker shut, and the morning turns black.

I dream of home; Galactic, Sun, Dawn and Dusk Ruffies, everywhere you look, there's pups, laughing, playing in the starlight, but missed most of all, I dream of my family, gathered quietly by our star. My dad, a large Galactic Ruffie, with patterns of the many moons of Jupiter mapped on his back. My mother, a beautiful Dawn Ruffie, with her large soft wings and her gentle muzzle as she tucked me in to bed... How I wish I was home...

It's another fiery sunset, and I'm waking to a particularly bright evening. I shade my eyes with a tired paw, yawning loudly, and flicking my starry tail. Darkness is taking his time to come around tonight... I wonder...
I risk a glance, readying myself to snap my eyes shut again, but instead of being scorched by the burning morning sun, this time my wide eyes are warmed by the brightest spectrum lights...
It's the Rainbow Vortex!
I bark in excitement as I somersault, rainbows flickering through my thick Galactic fur. Spectrum swirls around me like a hurricane, spreading wider until it connects the space between the sun and the moon. She emerged out of the sunlight, fur glittering gently. Her pearly white, feathered wings spread wide as she speaks. "Well, it took me long enough to get here, but I kinda like it. Shall we be off, then? My names Gelta by the way, what's yours?"

"I'm Banba..." I gasp, as I stare at her warm sunset colours as they swirl over her thick, soft fur. Her eyes, with the same spectrum glow as mine, drop to see the patterns that cloak my fur. She admires my markings for a second, until I interrupt: "If you were late, and I only just woke, then I must have been really late... Sorry if I kept you waiting, Gelta."
"No, actually, you were right on time." Soft rays of light flicker from her fur as she giggles. "I was the one who was late. The eclipse happened while you slept, so you couldn't have woken unless I was already here. So I should be the one to apologize, really. Lets just say I ran into a few troubles on the way, but that's a story for another time." She replies casually, licking her paw.

I drag my eyes off her enchanting form to examine our surroundings. Colours swirl around us, every shade imaginable sparkles and whooshes past. By unspoken agreement, we take one last glance around us and turn to the edge of the Vortex. Closer and closer we glide, until spectrum combs through my fur. I suddenly realise what the coloured show was last night; it wasn't fireworks at all, but the Vortex starting! She wasn't joking when she said she was late. I wonder what delayed her, but I don't say a word. We've got the rest of forever to talk, and I don't want to miss a single second of it.
