Like every day upon coming home, the first thing Feenstaub did was to turn on her computer.
Not to check the mail, of course; it wasn't like anyone ever wrote to her. No, she was just cruising around several fansites, reading amateur stories or checking the few comments she got on her own.
The internet was her safe refugee - no one could see her there, no one shied back from her horrid face. Here, she was able to be just herself, here people would judge her by character, not looks. Not that she really had lots of friends there, either, but at least people would talk to her and be nice.

With a soft 'pling', her chat program sprang to life.

Zuckerherz: Nah, it's okay.
Zuckerherz: I get beaten up every day anyway, doesn't make a difference.
Feenstaub: Your arm doing alright?
Zuckerherz: Sure, just a scratch. No worse than usual.
Zuckerherz: What about you? They hit you quite hard...
Feenstaub: No, I'm fine. It's just my skin that's broken, my bones are actually quite stable.
Zuckerherz: That really does look quite bad, though. Love Pandemic?
Feenstaub: I wish it were, there's remedies against that...
Feenstaub: I had an acident when I was little, burned most of my skin right off.
Zuckerherz: Must be nasty...
Feenstaub: It is. Less the condition itself, but how people react to it.
Feenstaub: No one even wants to talk to me, let alone get close enough to touch.
