Name: Leth
Gender: Female

Personality

Leth just turned eighteen, on the verge of her Hunter’s final test. She is a shy girl, who isn’t very confident in her abilities. She is a superb archer, and although she boasts this fact, she believes she can’t be as good as the other Hunters. She can hit any target that’s moving or still, even if it’s a couple miles away. But, because she doesn’t believe in her skills, she’s always training to get better.

However, Leth’s biggest fear is that she won’t be strong enough to kill her first animal—the final test of Hunters. The death of anything—human or animal—raises up strong feelings that Leth doesn’t want to feel. So, a death by her hands is something she doesn’t want to think about. There’s no escaping it, though, and she knows it.

To be a Hunter, one must kill to provide for the village. One must kill swiftly and with regards for the animal. One must also be strong—something that Leth wishes to become. Something Leth is afraid she’ll never become.

She purposely creates a persona of a strong, tough Huntress that is afraid of nothing, scared of no challenge, and willing to do anything in the name of becoming a Hunter. The only people who can see through the guise are the ones closest to her, Nero and Phil. She still doesn’t like showing them her true self, since it makes her feel weak and pathetic for not being strong, like they are.

Even though she is not very confident in herself, she is still a strong person who has yet to recognize it. She thinks that the only way to become strong is to become a Hunter.

Appearance

Leth is slim and lithe at a little over five feet six inches with shoulder length brown hair that she ties into a small ponytail. The tips of her bangs are dyed blonde and styled to the side of her face. With her thin, oval shaped face and honey brown eyes, she looks delicate and fragile.

She normally wears a short, brown top that shows off her small belly and tight, brown pants when she trains. Leth never leaves the house without her quiver full of arrows, which she wears slung across her back, just in case there’s a chance for quick practice. The bow she uses has been with her since she turned twelve. It’s dark gray, matching the dark forest shadows, and very well worn over the years.

Backstory

There lies a village hidden away by thick forests on every side. Everyone has a part to play in the upkeep of the village for everything to run smoothly. Most of the women are gatherers of the forest’s wild fruits, mushrooms, and various herbs. Some are even healers and doctors for the village. Most of the men, on the other hand, work on the village buildings and other physically demanding jobs. Some are given the elite job of Hunters.

Hunters are the group of inhabitants that are, simply, hunters. They are responsible for the main source of food. However, all Hunters have to go through training and the final test of their first successful kill before they can be initiated into the group. The village respects the forest and all its lives, so that the Hunters are trained to only kill if they are able to kill the animals with swift and nearly painless deaths.

The Spirit of the Forest keeps the village fed and safe with its abundance of life and its thick, dense trees that keep any curious people either lost in its walls or away for that fact. For this reason alone, the villagers make sure that each death is fast and not for fun or trophy. Not everyone is suited for the job of Hunter, but it doesn't stop some from trying.

Leth is a girl who has trained for years since she turned twelve, knowing that she could never be content with the job of gatherer and had no knack for healing or doctoring. The weapon of choice for her is the bow. She practices every day, because she knows she's not as good as any of the Hunters, even the Hunters-in-training.

No matter how many times she hits a bull's-eye at any distance.

Her closest friends are Nero and Phil, brothers who've been there for her whenever she needed them. Although Leth tries her hardest to act and look tough to everyone around her, the brothers both know the true Leth.

Leth tries her hardest to become the person she makes herself out to be, but it's still a long road ahead of her. The final test of her acceptance into Hunter status comes quickly, and she's not sure if she'll be able to pass.

Story

Leth stood on the outskirts of the thick, dense forest that surrounded her small village where she called home. She clenched her bow in her right hand, her knuckles white from holding on so tightly. The forest loomed in front of her, seemingly laughing at her hesitancy. She took in a deep breath, trying to steady her nerves.

"Hey, Leth", Nero greeted from behind her, nearly making her jump. She quickly masked her surprise before turning to return his smile. "Are you ready for your first hunt?"

"Yeah, no problem", she replied, nonchalantly. "I am the best archer, after all".

"Oh, you mean, the best archer after me, of course".

"Of course". She nudged him in the ribs before adding, "If I were dead and you couldn't lose to me anymore".

Nero didn't laugh, instead he looked at her a bit too intensely for her liking. "Seriously, are you ready? You know you don't have to participate. You are female, after all. You can just do, I don't know, women stuff".

"Oh, yeah?" Leth laughed. It sounded forced, even to her ears. "Women stuff! Who, me? Yeah, I can just imagine that". She looked back to the forest and swallowed back the fear that rose up suddenly. "Come on, let's get hunting before the sun gets too low".

Nero seemed doubtful, but she was glad when he didn't push the subject. Instead, he headed into the forest ahead of her. She took in another deep breath before following him.

Darkness quickly draped them as the thick canopy stole away most of the sunlight. Bluebirds twitted from branch to branch here and there. A scurrying motion brought Leth's attention to the right just in time to see a rabbit hide from their advance. Everything seemed peaceful and right. It was almost enough to calm Leth's nerves - almost.

They ventured about a mile into the forest's walls before Nero stopped them right at the edge of a small clearing. He turned to her put a finger to his lips, indicating silence. She nodded as he pointed back to the clearing. She leaned a little to the side to see in the direction he pointed. A small deer stood eating a patch of grass. Leth was afraid her first kill would be a doe, but then she saw it had small horns, indicating that it was male.

It didn't make her feel any better.

Nero silently moved away from Leth, carefully stepping over fallen twigs. He nodded in the direction of the deer. She gave a slight nod in return, her heart beating wildly in her chest. She half wished for the deer to be able to hear her frantic heart and run away.

With a moment's last hesitation, she lifted up her bow. She quietly slipped out an arrow from the quiver on her back and nocked it. Taking a deep breath, she aimed her weapon for the deer's heart.

Suddenly, the deer lifted up his head and flicked its gaze left then right. Without warning, he raced away, leaving the clearing empty."What just happened?" Leth exclaimed, lowering her bow. "I had him!"

"Damn". Nero spat. He pointed to the forest across from them. "It's Phil".

True to his word, Phil stumbled out into the clearing. With all the noise he was making, Leth was surprised she hadn't heard him earlier. Despite losing the deer, Leth was glad to see Phil, Nero's younger brother by two years. They watched as Phil glanced all around the area before he found them. He grinned as he made his way towards the two.

"Hey, guys, whatcha doing?" Phil asked as soon as he reached them.

"Trying to hunt" Leth snapped. "You scared off the deer with all that noise you made. So, thanks for that".

"Oh, come one, Lethy" Phil replied, poking her bow, "don't be mad. It's not like you'd be able to kill it, anyway".

"Says you" Leth countered. "Besides, I had him in my sights. There was no way I could miss".

"Okay, sure, sure" Phil said, patting her hand.

"I'm serious!"

"Come on" Nero spoke up before a fight broke out. "Let's go see if we can find another one. "Phil" - he pointed in the direction of the village- "you go back home"

"Aw, what?" Phile complained. "Come on, let me come. After all, I came out here just to find you guys. Took me forever, too. I'm pretty sure I got lost at one point"

"Phil, you walk like an elephant. Leth needs something called 'quiet' to stalk up on the deer". Nero shook his head, "I'm not even sure how you got to be a Hunter".

"Because of my devilishly amazing looks". Phil replied with a grin. "Fine, if you don't need my help, I'm gone. Good luck, Leth".They watched Phil leave before heading deeper into the forest.

Hours passed before Leth saw the next deer. She motioned for Nero to stop while her heart stopped. The sun was close to setting, dampening the forest with even darker shadows. She almost got away with not killing any deer, having escaped for at least the day. The deer they came upon was much larger than the last with horns that were at least a couple feet long. He was magnificent in the low light of the forest, standing tall and sturdy. His russet fur and white underbelly was darker with the day close to an end, giving him a more mystical look.

Somehow, Leth was more afraid of killing this one than the younger, more youthful deer. There was something about this deer that reminded her of the Spirit of the Forest. But, she couldn't fail her village. She had to become a Hunter. She had to prove to herself that she could be strong, like Nero or Phil. She hated not being sure - of not being the person others could really depend on.

Keeping that in mind, she took a deep breath in and out before nocking her bow with an arrow. She lifted the bow and aimed, not sure she could even kill this beast, like Phil had said. Letting go of the string, her heart broke.

The arrow zoomed through the air, its near silent path breaking through the silence of the forest. The arrow barely missed the deer, thunking loudly as it struck the earth just beyond him. The deer lifted up his giant head slowly, as if the near death couldn't faze him. He looked directly at her. She stopped breathing while lowering the bow. The deer slightly nodded his head before jumping over a bush and disappearing into the forest depths.

"Don't worry, Leth, you'll get him next time" Nero reassured her.

Leth shook her head, fighting the tears that wanted out. "I'm not sure I can. I mean, I am the best archer in the whole village, but I missed a deer that close? What good am I? Maybe Phil is right and I just can't kill anything".

"Don't worry about it" Nero said, touching her shoulder. "It just takes time and practice. You'll get it eventually". He took the bow out of her hand. "Let's go back before it gets too dark".

Leth stared at the place where the deer had stood. She quickly wiped her eyes before turning around to face Nero, giving him her best glare. "Fine, but don't you dare say a word about this to Phil!"

Nero laughed, the sound echoing through the forest. "Sure thing".

Together, they walked the journey back to the village in silence.
