Eric had always been a bit of a handful. He chewed everything and everyone. He jumped, he bounced, he ran, and most of all, he wagged his thick fluffy tail round and round so hard that his whole body would wiggle. He was adorable. But he was a nightmare.

Don't get me wrong, he grew into the most beautifully behaved bear, and I wouldn't have changed him for the world. However, there were a few times when we didn't think we'd be able to keep such a hyper, bad-tempered puppy. .

Proud winner of the Waggiest Tail Award, Eric was an excitable creature. Everybody, no matter what species, was his best friend. -

Unfortunately, at seven years old, Eric developed a cancerous tumour which rapidly grew and spread, and within a week it was time to say goodbye to my biggest little brother. Eric drifted off to sleep peacefully with a belly full of his favourite foods and a slobbery mouth still full of biscuits.

This story was originally written when Eric was still with us. I remember as I was writing, I looked over my shoulder at the big gentle bear curled up dreaming on the sofa, and I knew he was worth it. I was right about one thing. Eric was not a normal dog, not at all. He was most definitely a Superdog.

P.S. Eric's Subeta name was difficult to choose. I thought of it one day while laughing about how much he adored his pink towel we used to dry him with. He loved to rub his face in it, and he often snuggled up under it, so one chilly afternoon I put in round his shoulders like a cape, earning him the nickname Superdog.
