The legend.

Orange sands swirled in the wind and settled into mini amber dunes. The midday sun beat unrelentingly upon the piled sands and the temperature reached sweltering heights. Gusts of wind beat upon a small wooden door, as if someone were knocking softly.
A young woman opened the door a crack and peered out. Her gold eyes ran over the familiar dunes of the Gerudo Desert, looking for anything that was out of place. Nothing, however, could be seen. Taking a step outside and baring her red hair and tanned skin to the harsh sun, she again canvased the area. A small noise, almost a cry or a whimper, caused her to look down. There, a young popoko lay curled as if asleep.
"Now what do we have here?" she whispered quietly to herself. "We had best get in out of the desert and the sun."
Inside the young pet caused a small commotion among the gerudos. Seldom were any visitors, children or not, allowed within the gerudo community. Many of the tribe's women came to see the popoko, which the woman now carried in a swaddle of blankets.
"Karyu, why don't you just kill her now?" sneered an older women. "You know as well as I that we cannot allow others into our fortress. Why, any other being would have been caught and thrown into a cell by now."
Many others murmured their assent at her words. Several hands reached toward their scimitars and others gripped tighter upon their naginatas. The gerudos had not survived by welcoming outsiders into their midst; it was for that very reason that the Gerudo Fortress was heavily guarded and contained many warriors.
"I will bring her to Nabooru and she will decide." Karyu answered. There was something special about this pet, she thought, though she would say nothing if her leader decided otherwise.
The throng of women kept close beside her as she made her way through the maze of the fortress. After an uncountable number of turns, which would have confused any who had not spent many years inside the fortress, she arrived at their leader's room.
Respectfully, she knocked on the door and went in. Another woman, taller than Karyu, but with the same tanned skin and crimson hair, sat at a desk. She had been expecting company - word traveled fast in the fortress. The others crowded their way into the room and soon it was filled with commotion.
"Kill her!" one women shouted.
"She can't be allowed to stay here."
"We must protect our land and the Spirit Temple!"
Nabooru raised her hand for silence. She regarded the young woman and the popoko she carried carefully.
"Where did you find her?" she asked of Karyu. "Tell me the whole story and let the others here be silent."
"Outside a door facing The Haunted Wasteland. I was passing by on my regular guard duty, when a sound like knocking came from the door. I opened it, but there was no one there but this creature."
"The Haunted Wasteland?" Nabooru repeated softly to herself. "The way that leads to the Spirit Temple. Perhaps this is a sign."
The women began to whisper amongst themselves again and Nabooru called for silence.
"This young one was found on the path to our sacred temple. I believe she was sent here for a purpose and may have some hidden talent of use to us. None come through The Haunted Wasteland, except those vetted by the gerudo. Therefore, she must have been brought by the spirits of our people, which makes her a gerudo. She is Gerudo."

-------

Gerudo paced around the room, nervous but excited. Today the gerudos had something special planned. She had spent years with them, learning their ways and customs as her own and loved the entire tribe as family. She had learned to fight, as most of the gerudo, and practiced in the training courses. She learned to use her small body to her advantage, as it meant she was quicker and nimbler than many others. She learned to scratch with her claws, enough to make any attacker step backwards, in order to protect the gerudos she loved.
"We're ready for you." Karyu said, opening the door of the room just a crack.
Immediately Gerudo calmed herself and took a more dignified posture. When she regained her composure, she walked slowly out the door. There the women waited, gathered in a circle. In the very center was Nabooru, their leader, and she beckoned Gerudo to come join her.
"Many years ago," Nabooru said to Gerudo, using a voice that projected so everyone could hear, "you came to our fortress. You were found on The Haunted Wasteland, the path to our sacred temple, and it was for that reason we knew you had come to us with a special purpose. Here, you have grown and have become a fierce warrior with many talents."
Nabooru paused in her speech and Gerudo glanced at the women surrounding them. To her infinite delight, many of gerudo were nodding along with their leader's speech and flashing smiles at her. Then, Nabooru cleared her throat and continued talking.
"We have seen you fight to protect this fortress and us as hard as any gerudo here. In honor of that, we have prepared this ceremony in your honor."
A soft hum rose from the circle of women and a faint beating of drums could be heard. To Gerudo, the drums seemed the beat of her heart, racing faster and faster. Nabooru raised a cup high and gave it to the popoko to drink. Gerudo could see wisps of steam rising from the cup and when she put it to her lips, it was quite warm to the touch.
She tilted the cup back and swallowed. A raging fire ran down her throat, and she wanted to cry out, but she could not. Slowly, the heat of the drink subsided and she found she could breathe normally again. She swished her tail and found that it was not her tail at all. She stared down at her body and was shocked at the crimson fur that blazed. Her tail was made of pure flames that were, at the same time, far more luxurious than the fur which had previously graced it. Gerudo looked up at Nabooru who smiled as if she knew what was going to happen all along.
Gerudo stood up and left the circle, now that the ceremony was complete. A new power raced through her veins, as if the potion had turned even her blood to fire. The changes would take some getting used to but, as she flicked her tail and watched the flames cut through the air, she thought she'd manage just fine.

-------

"The time has come for a new journey in your life, young one." Nabooru said, looking down at the reborn popoku beside her. "Although I can hardly call you young any more, as full-grown as you are. We have an assignment for you, one of great importance."
"I will take any task you give me." Gerudo said respectfully.
"As you well know, the Ice Arrow is our most precious treasure. You must guard it." the gerudo leader told the popoko.
At this, Gerudo's eyes fell and a shadow passed over her face. To guard the treasure meant that she must leave the fortress, her first and only home. It would not be an easy task and she hated to say goodbye to the women she called family.
"The Ice Arrow cannot be allowed to fall into the wrong hands," Nabooru continued. "With Ganondorf still out there, it's position is especially precarious as he will certainly come to look for it. At all costs, we cannot let that happen. You have been blessed with fire, given a talent we cannot possess. It was for this reason I feel you were brought to us. Do this for us, for the gerudos."
Gerudo looked up at her leader with a fierce pride and love. Above all, she knew she would always protect the gerudos, all of them, and all that they kept sacred.
"I will," she announced.
Later that day, Gerudo had her belongings packed and stood at the door that led deep into the Gerudo's training grounds. The journey to the Ice Arrow would require bravery and steel as the enemies inside were almost as fierce as her. She would guard the Arrow with all her might and, should Ganondorf ever come within reach, she would stop him. If she couldn't, then she would draw the Ice Arrow into her tail and let the flames consume it.
He would not get the Ice Arrow.
