A young man stood in a verdant meadow, eyes shaded, surveying his surroundings. There was a small pond under the shade of a few olive trees. Its peaceful cerulean surface was broken by a mermaid; she looked at him, flipped her long blond hair over her shoulder and waved. He waved back and she disappeared beneath the surface again.

Several yards away, a few centaur foals caught fireflies in their hands and shouted excitedly to each other when the frightened little bugs flashed their warning flames. The tiny fires were too small to hurt a creature as large as a centaur, and it was usually fun to pick on the temperamental little insects.

All in all, it promised to be an enjoyable day, the kind of day that made a man want to charge forward bravely, slay some terrible beast and win the love of a beautiful maiden.

Nikolai did none of these things. Instead, he trailed his fingers along the leather strap that crossed from one shoulder to his waist. He unfastened the strap and slid a polished set of reed Pan Pipes from his back.

He settled himself comfortably beneath the shade of a tree as he gently blew into the pipes. A crowd of wood folk (His eyes automatically picked out three pretty nymphs.) gathered round him to hear; No one missed the chance to hear a satyr play. He chose a lively drinking song and the creatures began pairing off to dance.

He paused a second; all but one of them was pairing off, but a tan-skinned nymph with lustrous black hair approached him, carrying two full wineglasses and swaying gently. He paused a second and grinned at her, patting the grass beside him. It seemed like he would be busy for the rest of the day - and he didnt have to slay one monster.
