Caligula Romanesça is the current scion of the Romanesque family, whose members are almost all Umbras.

Eloquent in his sarcasm, poetic in his destruction, Caligula has delusions of grandeur and declares himself a virtuoso of violence. He is highly cogent, fiercely articulate and intelligent, with undeniably charisma. Although perverse about bloodshed, as toyingly sadistic as a cat with a mouse, he is not evil. Intellectually, he is aware of acceptable norms of social protocol; behaviourally, he neither cares nor understands that his brutality is problematic.

However callous, his attitude is not born of maliciousness, nor is it hypocritical. He expects no more tenderness or mercy out of others, and he is quick to recognize an admirable beating when he takes one (although the last that happened was so long ago it's hardly worth remembering). Caligula believes that all lives including his own are approximately worthless in the grand scheme of things, so what matters one more or one less? To his credit, he is not all wrong; granted other people living those lives might wish to disagree.

Not to give the impression, either, that Caligula is a rabid murderous maniac. He is efficient and brilliant and intelligent, with a cultured taste for aesthetics. Spirited to the point of seeming immature or irresponsible, he has no regard for rank or class status, treating his lieges as like-minded brethren and comrades.

His constant summoned companion and butler is Yorick -- predatory, methodical, and precise, Yorick is the terror that dissembles, the hatred that smiles, the criminal with a good conscience, the killer who proclaims himself a saviour (warning: has an apparently endless cache of firearms).

The Romanesque are served by the Antonesque, whose paterfamilia Antonin fully separated out from Romulus. Ophelia Antonesça is an Illuminati and Caligula's lover, serving him in the only service for which his shadows are not adequate.

A hundred and ten percent feminine, from her wily and underhanded methods of dealing with confrontation, to her submissiveness, she can always be found at the side of a strong alpha male. Surrounded at a young age by ambitious men with an eye on the position of Antonesque patriarch, Ophelia is an expert at taking advantage of enthusiastic suitors while she hangs back to watch them sweat and bleed for her. She will never fancy any man so easily commanded; nevertheless, it is good sport. Schadenfreude is a bitch.

Quite flighty, her allegiances shift easily. No matter how lovingly Ophelia clings to the side of her current lover, showering him with affection, what she lusts after is the heady scent of masculine dominance. She is ready to leave him for his better at his first sign of being anything less than top dog. But woo her with power, and there is not one hint of defiance in her. Though dangerously capricious, she is no traitor; as much as she enjoys a good scene of conflict and trouble, her personal philosophy is to make love, not war.

Ophelia has strongly traditional values of male chauvinism. She hates mouthy girls who do not know their place; the yielding gentleness she presents to men gives way to sadistic punishment. More than headstrong women, however, she loathes passive, mealy-mouthed men. For them, she reserves her cruelest manipulation and the survivors always change for the better. The rest? Well, no great loss. She is a survivor herself, and plans many steps ahead. Her wrath may not be swift, but it is as unexpected as it is terrible.

Apart from being a crazy flagellant, York's favourite past-time is "disciplining" other people. Harsh, strict, spiteful, she is a great believer in rules, suffering, and self-restraint. What doesn't kill you makes you stronger, pain is weakness leaving the body, and all the associated dogma. Because however skeptical and independently thinking she might be, she is rigorously dogmatic, bordering on obsessive compulsive.

To go with that, she has very little mercy. York is a perfectionist, which can clash with her short fuse. But she is particular about never making the same mistake twice... and in the rare instance she does, she punishes herself scrupulously. While she takes immense pride in everything she does, this conceit is warranted by her thorough and exacting methods.
