She is (one) and the other (two) is--she reaches and the other looks back at her in fragments, like a mirror clouded over on the side, the moon obscured beyond a troubled sky, a shadow fallen on the sand with no figure to give it shape.

It is then she becomes aware of the feeling of loss, like being overwhelmed by a rogue wave, the same that ushered her ashore. The other is a shadow, a piece that has gone missing. And she knows that the whitewashed coral of her ribs is the wake of the other piece, the brittle driftwood of her leg, the sea sanded shells on the side of her face.

The part of her that comprises more is hollow bones. For she is one; mercury and light, belonging of above yet somehow dragged to the depths of the sea to take the place of this other; left in the absence of two.

There are warm hands cradling her head as the tide laps at her feet, yet she can only think where? Where is more? Where is she?

There, there, a voice is saying, and she spits out where on the wake of a mouth full of brine.

There, there, it says, carding a hand through salt-soaked hair, and she shuts her eyes to the dusk.
