As a small girl from New Orleans, Louisiana, Swietie (Seh-WEE-TIE) was naturally devastated when she heard of the tragedy of Hurricane Katrina. She also felt a natural kinship to the people in Haiti whose lives were decimated by the earthquake and breaks down in tears whenever she hears news about any deaths or sad stories of the Haitians.

I should explain. Long ago, in days of yore, folk in Haiti would come and live here as the banana boats would sail through the Mississippi River almost daily. Americans paid better and they could support their families better here in New Orleans. Swietie's family, who got her unique name from her foster grandmother, Swenall LÃ¨tie, an old Creole woman who had worked for her family as long as anyone could remember. She had long been a member of their family, all-purpose grandmother and housekeeper. This Creole woman had ties in Haiti, half-brothers and sisters that she held dear to her heart. They would occasionally float by on the tankers and visit for a while, getting jobs where they could and then moving back, amid many tears and gushy goodbyes. When Swenall died, Swietie decided to bury her friend and almost-relative in the placed where she would receive the most love -- in Haiti. She was on a tropical hill, covered in sunflowers and other miscellaneous things, planted by mourners and lovers come to say their final goodbyes. When our heroine heard of the earthquakes, the first thing she did was book a flight. Not anything else.

She arrived to collapsing buildings and mourning shrieks filling her ears. She ran to the top of the mangled hill to the small, earthen grave and it's stone grave marker. She paused, seeing the untouched ground in place and an ocean of flowers, the colors of the rainbow, with the yellow sunflowers, her grandmother's favorite, commanding her attention, holding the grave firm in the unstable ground. She shooed off a surviving, unshaved sheep that was grazing, and sat upon the grass. The sea of flowers waved as two small birds fluttered up from the ground. They were teal and red and gray, showing the proud colors that her grandmother adored. Swietie remembered something then, and stood, determined to do her best in helping these poor people.

She often wears cargo shorts, even in the dead of winter, and tee-shirts and Saints jerseys are her favorite. She always wears a sunflower necklace that her grandmother gave to her. Creature: Human.

Personality: She is really rude at times, but is really sweet when she wants to be. Once you get to know her, you'll love her.
