“Tell me about your childhood.”

Murry was born like your average child, albeit a little under the average weight. As he grew, he seemed to be prone to colds and flus more than other children, but not anything serious. He developed various skills early on, but childish habits - such as thumb-sucking and having a full meltdown - took a while for him to break. When his mother took him to play with other children, Murry would often hide behind her and barely speak.

When school began, Murry tried to leave continuously. He was highly intimidated by the other children’s immediate friendships with one another, and he held back his tears as much as he could. He had no one to protect him. But he soon noticed another little boy was out of the group as well. His name was Gerald, and he slowly approached Murry. They ended up talking and playing together, just the two of them. And since that day, the two became the best of friends. They were in the same class each year, much to their delight. When they were together, they no longer feared school and social interactions, and they could easily ignore any outcasting of the other children.

The August after second grade was the last time they ever saw each other.

It started off as an average day. The sun was a little clouded, but there was such a tiny amount of rain that it really didn’t matter. Gerald had been invited to play at Murry’s house, so he eagerly headed over. He was far too excited to look anywhere but ahead. After all, they were going to have so much fun! What he didn’t notice, however, would change everything.

Gerald was hit by a speeding car. He struggled to stay alive, but it was all for naught. He passed away at the beginning of his life, age eight.

“My condolences…how did you handle the news?”

Gerald’s mother called Murry’s parents later that evening. They tried to put it gently, insisting he was in a much better place now, he’d still be with him in spirit, he’d always be watching out for his best friend. Murry’s poor heart couldn’t take it. Tears poured down his face, and he rushed to lock himself in his room. He stayed there the whole rest of the day, refusing to come out even in the morning. His parents didn’t know what to do. They let him out of school for two weeks. They tried to talk about it with him, but he would either not say anything or tear up instantly. He barely ate anymore, and he spent at least six hours in his room, alone, doing nothing, every day. Even through middle school he barely spoke to anyone, and would occasionally be caught crying in the bathroom. Kids who didn’t know what happened would talk about him behind his back, call him a crybaby, a whiner, a nerd. Some days he would be covered in bruises from boys who couldn’t stand him. By high school he seemed mute and completely drained of energy. He would still revert to childish actions. His only friends were his toys lying around. He talked to them every day. In fact, he still does,

“Have you ever finally accepted it?”

Four years after his high school graduation and Murry struggles even more with his life each day. He seems to express symptoms of schizophrenia, depression, and severe anxieties. He can barely survive stepping out of his house anymore.

His suppressed frustration at losing Gerald, at his peers in school, has actually manifested itself into another personality entirely. Sometimes, Murry will feel like he’s unconscious. That’s when his other personality takes over. He is much more aggressive and cruel, not at all like the paranoid naive Murry everyone is familiar with. If anyone is in the room when his alternate self takes over, there’s no telling what he may do to them. Stay as far away from this side as possible.

“Looks like our time is up, I’m afraid. Good talk today. See you soon.”

Murry is finally getting professional help in the form of his new therapist, Dr. Melvin Corvix. He’s a bit on the odd side, even seeming condescending to his patients at times, but his results are hard to argue over. Murry takes his newly prescribed medication every day, and though it may take a while for noticeable improvement, he is slowly changing for the better.

One thing his old habits of talking to his toys has done is help with improving his social skills. Through toys, Corvix has taught him how to try and think more positively of other people, and even encouraged him to get a new job in ventriloquism. Murry is showing exemplary efforts, and is actually feeling slightly less hatred for himself and even a little pride. He’s been hurt badly, but not broken. Corvix is determined he’ll get Murry’s life together soon.
