Experiment H23, that’s what they called him. We all know about those mad scientists and their wacky ideas. We also know just how wrong they can go.

The story behind the idea for a reanimated corpse is well known by just about everyone. But does anyone ask about the test subjects? Does anyone even care? Experiment H23 once thought someone did but-

That’s jumping ahead.

Doctor Einhurst found Experiment H23 while cleaning out an old lab. He was filthy, starving and terrified. After much coaxing, Dr. Einhurst managed to bring Experiment H23 out and feed him a decent meal. The doctor cleaned him up enough to make him presentable but they had one reoccurring problem. Experiment H23’s head would not sit right. Dr. Einhurst could straighten it but without something to keep it in place it would just snap back again. Of course it would look ridiculous for Experiment H23 to always be holding his head straight so the doctor fitted him with a special turtleneck that locked his head in a more proper position.

The doctor brought Experiment H23 home and gave him his own room. A deep devotion to the doctor grew within Experiment H23’s reanimated heart and he proved time and time again the lengths he would go to please his savior.

It never seemed to be enough.

Over the years, Dr. Einhurst schooled Experiment H23 in the various subjects known to man. Soon Experiment H23 could read long texts and even find enjoyment in the dry words. But still, he was a disappointment in the doctor’s eyes because he could not be shown to normal society.

This suited Experiment H23 just fine since he had no desire to be a part of the silly social circles the doctor described. No matter how the doctor dressed him he would always be different. Why subject himself to the ridicule that would surely follow any foray into society.

Then came a time when Dr. Einhurst lost all patience and cut off all contact with Experiment H23. They still lived in the same house and often caught glimpses of each other. Experiment H23 sank back into the misery and terror that had consumed him for so many years, but now there were words circling his mind to describe his experiences.

Oh how the eloquent words sharpened the fear all the more. The knowledge of what could happen to those who didn’t fit in with the definition of normal stabbed at him cruelly. On a still night, the members of the household could hear his hushed moans.

All may have continued like this without no real harm had the doctor not thrown the party. Cheerful guests milled about the party and ballroom, their voices drifting up to Experiment H23’stower room. The fear gripped him tighter than ever before. Suppose one of them should wander away from the party and find him? What would happen?

With this in mind Experiment H23 donned his formal clothes Dr. Einhurst had given him so long ago. He straightened the special neck piece and the glistening emerald brooch. The hat’s too wide brim made a mockery of a proper hat, but it was the only way to keep his face in shadows.

Experiment H23 crept down the hall, hoping to run into no one. If he could just make it to the back doors he could hide in the stables ‘till after the party.

Luck was not with him and it was a lovely lady and Dr. Einhurst who stumbled upon him. “Why hello good sir, I don’t believe we’ve has the pleasure.” She extended her hand, waiting patiently for him to take it.

“Oh, you wouldn’t care to meet him. Come Scarlet; let me show you the library.” Dr. Einhurst said quickly.

“I do not wish to see your stuffy library again. Introduce me to this man immediately.” Scarlet demanded. Both men searched their brains for a way out of this disastrous situation. They might have found one had Scarlet’s impatience not gotten the better of her. She snapped her hand up and jerked Experiment H23’s hat clean off, leaving his face exposed.

She screamed and ran.

“You fool! How could you be so stupid?” This proved to be too much for Experiment H23. He was not stupid, the doctor had seen to that. He easily lifted the doctor and flung him into the wall. Then, without a thought to the doctor’s well-being, he fled the estates.

Past the stable and off the property, out of the town and past the country border.

Experiment H23 finally stopped and did something he’d never done. He cried. Oh how good it felt. Years of fear and frustration streamed down his face in salty rivers. He would have gone on forever if not for the tap on his shoulder.

“Excuse me sir, are you alright?”

Experiment H23 hurriedly covered his face, terrified, of the woman’s reaction. “I am alright. “ he mumbled.

“Oh I don’t think so, you’ve been crying. I can hear it in your voice.” She accused. “Why are you covering your face?”

“I’ll frighten you.” Experiment H23 said.

“No you won’t.” she answered sadly. “I will close my eyes and you must look at my face. Then you will see that I will not be frightened.”

Experiment H23 peeked between his fingers and found her eyes were indeed shut tight. But what piqued his interest were the crisscrossing scars over her face. A deep scar ran over the bridge of her nose and continued over her left cheek until it disappeared into her sandy brown hair. Another started above her right, continuing under the eye and stopping at her jaw. A third across her pink lips.

“What happened?” Experiment H23 asked.

“Bandits.” She answered. “Now may I see your face?”

“Yes.” Experiment H23 held his breath as she opened her startling green eyes and slowly traced the mess that was his face. Tears dripped down her cheeks and she reached out a hand to touch him gently. The warmth surprised him. In all the years he had lived with the doctor, he had never once been touched.

“What happened?”

“I died.” Experiment H23 answered. “Then they brought me back. I think. I can’t remember very well.”

“What’s your name?”

“They called me Experiment H23.” He answered. The woman clicked her tongue.

“That just won’t do.”

“But that’s my name.”

“Perhaps we could shorten it. How about Experim?” He nodded. “Well then, it’s nice to meet you Experim. My name is Giselle. Please won’t you come in for tea?”
