The Cloud Forest Pygmy-owl (Glaucidium nubicola) is a small owl found in central and southern Columbia as well as northern Ecuador. These little birds are only about 16 cm tall. There are around 1400 - 7000 mature individuals currently estimated to be in the wild. This will not remain stable, however, as this species (like many others) is experiencing population declines due to habitat loss. They are now listed as 'Treatened' on the IUCN Red List. This is tragic, as they are so poorly known that their status as a species was only 'discovered' in 1999.
This little owl lives at heights of 1200 - 2000 m high in humid cloud forests. It mainly eats insects (which are always in abundance in tropical regions) but may also indulge in small lizards and birds. Sadly, the forests in which these birds make their homes are subject to logging. Cloud Forest Pygmy-owls can tolerate some habitat degradation - they can be found on the edges of logging sites, where little forest remains and the natural ecosystem is disturbed. Further modification to its home, however, cannot be tolerated. Some sites where the owl was recorded in the 1980s have now been completely deforested. This might be due to a lack of nesting areas, a lack of food, increased diseases or some combination thereof.
