there's no place left in this blood
For your restless fluttering
Your sleepless ways

Nymphalidae was born with a terrible gift.
She was born at the edge of a forest bordering the ocean, and born into Merana’s grip. She discovered her gift at a young age; it was a sixth sense, and she came to realize that she could hear things that other young ones could not.
It was the butterflies. They spoke to her in whispers; sometimes they were sad or troubled, sometimes they were joyous. They followed her, at times, and sometimes even went as far as to ask favors of her. She never told anyone about what she heard. She was afraid the clan leaders would decide she was insane, and she couldn’t have that. She wanted to follow in the ways of her mother and father, to be beautiful and proud and take care of their seaside forest; she had no wish to be different.
But, sadly, she was.

Kick a little bitter into the night
Spark of the stars leaving on my heart

As hard as she’d tried to prevent it, word eventually got out about her gift. Kanaya, the healer, was the first person to come to Nymphalidae about her abilities. She was determined to help Nymphalidae without scaring her, and so she told her a story. At the beginning it seemed irrelevant, as though it were something that was meant to have a moral that Nymphalidae would not understand for many years. But it wasn’t; it was an explanation. Kanaya couldn’t give her a precise reason why she heard the butterflies’ words, but she could tell her the significance of it.
They were souls of those once living. They weren’t just butterflies. Nymphalidae felt, in that moment, like she had pieced together some puzzle; it explained why they were so sad sometimes, and why they often asked favors of her.
The tribe tried to keep it all as secret as possible. They knew perfectly well what would happen if Merana caught wind of it, and so they made every attempt to keep it under wraps. Despite their best efforts, Merana did find out. She wanted Nymphalidae to do her bidding, and when Merana makes a request for you, there’s no option of saying “no”.
Nymphalidae knew there was no seeing her family anymore, after that.
