In a dark, lonely alley in the streets of the city, there is a dumpster. Next to that dumpster is a pile of soggy, old cardboard boxes. They are never picked up with the rubbish, just left there. They grow mould on them, rats make their homes in them, and eventually the boxes just fall apart at which point the rats chew them up for nests.

It seems like there is nothing out of the ordinary, it's just a secluded alley, which the usual rubbish and rats. But one of the earlier mentioned cardboard boxes is more than a home for rats. It's also home to a dog.

There isn't many that know about Olly. His fear of humans keeps him in hiding. People have tried to catch him, but he has always managed to escape. Olly spends his days curled up in the darkest, driest box he can find, rats and fleas crawling all over his bony body. He spends his nights rummaging in the dumpster for any scrap of food he can find. He rarely, if ever, leaves the alley these days.

Olly isn't the prettiest dog around. Some kind of terrier mix is what he looks like. His fur is short all over except for his tail and the inside of his ears which is long and matted. His skinny frame makes his legs seem too long for his body. His legs - he only has three. One ear is half the length of the other, been torn. He is often damp, and sticky from rummaging in the dumpster. He has some bald spots where you can see the flea and rat bites.

Olly's life hasn't always been that of a street dog. He did have a home when he was young. He was born into a loving family who had rescued his mother off the street. They couldn't keep him and his siblings though, and rehomed them. The home he went to, is where he got his name. The family was great at first. They even paid thousands in vet bills when Olly managed to escape and got hit by a car on his adventure (which is how he ended up with only three legs). But like most good things, that time came to an end.

The family moved away. They advertised Olly as free to good home and gave him to the first person that came along. Sadly, that person wasn't a good home. He didn't want a new pet. He wanted bait for his fighting dogs. He got Olly worked up, beating him, kicking him, burning him. Anything to get him in an aggressive mood. Then he put him in a pen with his fighters. The dogs tore at Olly, who was much smaller than them and struggled to fight back. This is when his ear was torn. Suddenly the man lifted him out of the pen and took him to the car. The man wanted a dog that would fight back, teach his dogs what fighting was all about. Olly didn't do this.

The man drove for a while, Olly quivering in the back seat. The next time the man got out of the car, he grabbed Olly by the scruff of the next and dropped him on the side of the road before driving off.

Olly walked down the road, many people drove past, but none stopped to help him. The man hadn't dropped him off too far from the city though and Olly was soon on the streets of town. He remembered his old family, how they would give him food if he whined at them. Walking up to strangers, he tried the same thing, but he was kicked, hit and shooed away. After days of this, Olly dared not to approach humans again.

After a week of trying to evade humans and eating scraps dropped on the sidewalk, Olly found his alley. Humans rarely came into it, only to put things in the dumpster, and when they did they didn't even notice Olly there. Since that day Olly stays in the alley, fending for himself and dreaming of his old family.
