Caine is a highly intelligent crow that had been experimented on to assert his (since he's male) intelligence. The tests and examinations as well as the cruel way he was treated lead to a shattering of his mind. He split into countless different personalities, all with their unique traits and strengths as well as weaknesses. Of course at first he had a hard time getting used to it and for a while refered to himself as 'us'. Even nowadays he sometimes slips up and uses the plural to refer to himself. Over time his 'main' personality resurfaced again (leading to him identifying as male, singular). His split personalities made it easier to analyze situations and informations, since a dormant personalitly that has the knowledge needed, wil, take over. Caine used his broken mind, made it his strength and was able to escape the laboratory.
He's understandably weary of humans now, partly because of the treatment he received, obviously, for the other part he just doesn't think of humans as a particularly intelligent species. For the most part they have yet to prove him wrong.
At times he agrees to be hired to investigate mysterious events. Most of the time he's supposed to work with a team, which he declines since he, himself, is already a team of many minds.
