I got Koko when I was just three years old. There had been a lot of armed burglaries in the area, and the hope was that a dog would scare anyone off.

Koko quickly became my best friend. The first books I learned how to read were about dogs, and by the time I was five, I was buying huge encyclopedias, so I could learn about the different breeds. Koko was a mutt, a cross between a poodle and a Rhodesian ridge back.

The Rhodesian ridge back is known for being brave, vigilant, loyal, and extremely protective of their owner. I saw this in action when I was five when a group of teens attempted to steal by bike. Even after knocking me off, they continued to hurt me. I was so scared. Koko witnessed all this from behind the fence and was less than pleased. She broke through and chased all of the theives up a tree, where they stayed until help arrived.

Koko did some silly things too. Whenever she wanted to play, she'd stick her butt straight up in the air and wag her tail. When she was curious, she'd perk her ears straight up. I spent many times watching her do this, and eventually managed to work out how to wiggle my ears like she could. It was a pretty cool trick when you're just a kid.

Time went by and we both grew. I became a young teenager struggling to get by in school. All students in the state were required to write an essay that would determine if they passed to the next grade. The prompt was, "Write about your best friend and why they're so special." I, of course, wrote about Koko.

Not only did I pass the exam, but I got one of the highest scores in the state, won numerous writing awards, and got to meet some pretty famous people. This sparked a new interest for me, and again, time went by and we both grew. I became a writer, and to this day, don't think I would have discovered my passion if it weren't for Koko.

Time can be a horrible thing. It's not fair that dogs age faster than humans, but so it is.

Koko was 16, and I was 19. She suffered a stroke and injured her back to the point where she was unable to move. She was in so much pain. I wanted to fix her so bad, but there was only one thing that could be done.

Koko passed away on September, 25th, 2009.

For a while, I felt like a lost a part of me. But now, looking back... I didn't really lose her. You can't have someone or something in your life for 16 years and not have it change you. Koko helped shape me into the person that I am today, so I guess in that sense, she lives on.

Rest in peace.
