"Do you know what copulates on this ship? Rats. Nesting in our rubbish, swimming in our filth…devouring each other just to make more rats."

"You must be a surpassingly lonely man, Mister Hickey." Captain Crozier said to the rat faced man. Cornelius Hickey was not even his real name, but he smiled back to the captain, smugly and deviously as usual. Yes, he had indeed been a very lonely man, but that was only because nobody deserved his company. Growing up in a very poor family in the 1820s, he was an intelligent, opportunistic, and shameless survivor. Reading people and manipulating them to his favor was his natural born talent.

Cornelius despised the rich, royal, and powerful, not only because he was jealous, but also that he deemed them as unworthy and excessively vain. And that was just dull and unpractical, with an extreme lack of exciting challenges.

He thought that this arctic expedition was his best chance to find his equal, and to prove that a petty officer was far more superior than any of the high ranking commanders. And he was right. The extreme coldness didn’t freeze him; the threat of being exposed of his illegal sexual relationship with Gibson didn't scare him; the humiliating public punishment didn’t weaken him; the distrust from the captain didn't deter him; lead poisoning, scurvy, or hunger didn’t cloud his judgement; even having a noose around his neck didn’t kill him.

He lied, stole, cheated, bribed, threatened, stabbed, shot, and cannibalized without remorse. Now it was time for him to meet his equal, the supernatural being which the native people called Tuunbaq. Neither the past or the future mattered anymore, as he firmly believed that he would live in this glorious and divine moment for eternity. He shall wreak havoc.
