Her green dress swished with her movement, a whisper lost in the wind. The sun beamed brightly for a moment, illuminating an outline of pale skin on what might be mistaken for a child.

A lonely soul lurking the earth, Susan had died when she was six. Though her ghostly form retained the same shape over time, her mind had aged and refined, becoming sharp and precise. Forced into this life by the whims of chance, she had become determined to find an escape from this existence.

Susan had wandered the land seeking answers – from Atebus and Veta to Delphi and the Arctic Frosts. Finally, she had heard in the forests of Shadowglen of a glade hidden from the world. Tucked in the mountains of Darkside, a fountain of youth existed, so powerful it could even restore the dead back to life. She was sure the glade would offer the life she had dreamt of these past two hundred years.

Orange boots stumbled on the gravelly path as she left the forest and began the trek up the mountain path. Excitement propelled her forward, her sharp blue eyes vigilantly looking for the next clue on the whereabouts of the glade.

Finally, after many twists and turns through caves and around the mountains, the blood red stone gave way to soft grass. She fell to her knees and gasped. The folk tale was true! It existed! A field of beautiful flowers surrounded a softly gurgling fountain. The pale brick of the fountain stood out against the life of the glade, but was decorated with dashing green climbing vines. Winking tulips, bold calla lilies, and waving snapdragons welcomed her and encouraged her to come forward. Plucking a yellow split bellflower, Susan replaced the drying flowers in her hair with the freshly picked one.

Laughing with joy, she spun in circles to soak up the sun. Though her movements cast a soft breeze through the area, her laughter subsided when she remembered that she was still just a ghost. But soon, she could enjoy life fully again.

She approached the water and noticed a pitcher sitting on the ledge. Remembering the legend, which said the pitcher was needed in order to realize the full effects, she dipped it into the water and scooped some out. Bringing the pitcher to her lips, the water tickled her throat as it settled downward, but was otherwise cool and calming.

Lying back in the grass, the water now felt hard in her stomach. The glade turned on her, the grasses seizing her limbs and the flowers clung to her clothes. She tried to scream for help, but alas, being only a ghost, no sound came out. She struggled against the glade, kicking and fighting against the terrorizing plants, but her frail body was quickly overwhelmed and subdued.

Was it hours later? Or merely minutes? However much time had passed, Susan felt different. She knew the water had inspired some change in her body, because she seemed more solid. Crawling over to the fountain, which was bubbling just as peacefully as it had when she arrived, she pulled herself up on the ledge and peered into the water.

Though the slight wind caused her reflection to ripple, the results were clear and they were horrifying. The bellflower she had plucked earlier had expanded and folded against her head. She reached up to see if she could pull it off, but she couldn’t get her fingers underneath the petals, and her attempts to remove it resulted in pain.

Her skin was noticeably tanner than it ever had been, though her eyes remained just as blue. When she looked down, she saw that her green dress had transformed as well, turning into large leaves that were held tightly to her body by wrapping vines.

A realization hit her. If the bellflower was now a part of her skull, perhaps her dress was just as firmly attached to her flesh? She tried to press fingers underneath her sleeves, but felt only a seamless transition from flesh to plant. When she touched the belt of moss and mushrooms at her waist, she felt the pressure from her fingers in her hip. Her body was growing those plants!

She fell down onto the ground with dismay. Hugging her knees to her chest, her unchanged orange boots peeking out from underneath her legs, she felt large tears skate down her face. Sure, the water had brought her back to life, but this was not the life she had expected. She thought she’d be human again, rather than a part-plant, part-human cursed being.

After some time, it occurred to her that she couldn’t rejoin the human race in this state. However, it was the humans who had passed along the tale of this glade, sharing with each generation that a fountain of youth existed in Darkside’s mountains.

Determined, she stood up and nodded firmly to reassure herself. She would dedicate her days to a life in this glade, ready to warn any travelers of the curse hidden beneath the water.
