Information

Full Name: Flandre Scarlet
Nicknames: Flan, Flannie, "The Devil's Sister"
Gender: Female
Age: Appears to be around seven years old physically, but is truly a little over 495 years of age.
Date of Birth: August 10th, 1508 A.D.
Date of Turning: October 22nd, 1515 A.D.
Occupation: None, aside from being a destructive little troublemaker.

Species: Vampire
[Painted Devil Bat subspecies]

Height: 4'2"
Weight: 74lbs, not counting her wings, which are about 15lbs on their own.
Build: Petite and well-fed
Eye Color: Red
Hair Color: Blond
Distinguishing Features: Pointed ears, long claw-like fingernails, large artificial wings made of iron rebar and glowing pieces of stained glass, compulsive twitching in her right hand

Likes: Fresh blood and flesh, her sister and sister-in-law, her plush toys, the number four, the color red, candy and baked goods, long naps, her wings and the pretty lights on them, bats and other animals, the taste of the liver and the heart, hide-and-seek, warm baths
Dislikes: Sunlight, rain, the smell of garlic, holly branches, being ignored, loud or stressful situations, not being able to play, being hungry, the taste of most organs, sour and bitter foods

Other:
- Lacks wings in her human form, when most, if not all Painted Devil Bat vampires possess wings in any appearance they may take.
This stems from the nature of her transformation into a vampire; she was initially bitten and nearly killed by one, but was then drained completely by her older sister Remilia in an attempt to save her life. Different venoms from Painted Devil Bats in the same individual may cause glitches during the transformation, preventing the development of wings and causing notable effects on the brain.
The wings in her human form are artificial, made of bent iron rebar and stained glass. She does possess wings in her bat form, but cannot fly well with them.

Makeshift Little "Family"

Remilia

Remi! Remi, Remi, Remi. You know why I'm happy?
Because we're gonna have a yummy dinner together tonight! I'm gonna be able to stay up here to eat dinner!
I hope we get to have sweets after we eat the dinner, too..

Sakuya

I'm so happy you and Remi are m.. married? Married! Yes. Because you two seem so much happy-er now that you are!
You're the best, Sakuya, and I'll always love you 'n Remi.. don't ever not be the best!

Other Mansion Residents

Patchouli

Heehee.. Meiling says you're scary sometimes. But you're not! You always just kinda look at me funny and then go back to reading.
I think you're just silly.

Meiling

I don't want Remi and Sakuya to be mean to you! Naps are good, I think..
And sometimes, you let in people that Sakuya catches and gives to me, and they're yummy! So you shouldn't be in trouble for that!

Koakuma

But Remi didn't say anything about not going in the library. She just said I couldn't go upstairs.
I could find a way into a downstairs part of the library.. and then I could go in there. It's still downstairs though! See, that makes sense, doesn't it?

Outsiders

Reimu

You're mean.. I'm a good girl, because that's what my big sister says, and Remi's always right! I'm-- I'm gonna get Remi and Sakuya to hurt you for you being mean to me!

Marisa

You should go away and not come back. All you do is make Patchy really, really angry and scream a lot and stomp around.
It's not fun to scream and stomp, so go away! (And you sung the song wrong too..)

Shikieiki

Wha? I don't know what you mean! I'm just squeaking! Why should I stop, uuu~uuu? I like to squeak, all batties squeak!

Yuyuko

You're the best ghosty lady. You always bring lots of... oh! Oh, did you bring sweets this time? I want some-- I want some, please!

Mamizou

Fluffy fluffy! I like to play with it and pull on it, nobody else has a tail 'round here.. but I like the little birdies, too!

History

Once, a long time ago, there was a family of nobles in Romania. There was a mother, and a father, and two little girls -- one of them was named Rahela, and her younger sister was named Florina. They all lived rather happily, eating well and staying warm during the cold winters, or, at least, up until late October on the year of 1515.

The rumors of vampires drove the people of the small territory into nervous bouts of superstition, but nothing prepared them for what was to come.

Rahela went missing one night, and only returned after her skin had paled, after her hair had withered to a pale blue color, and after she had grown a pair of powerful wings. With her return, a great many other vampires came with her, and they effortlessly massacred the village.

Found in her room by her older sister, Florina barely clung to life, skin riddled with claw marks and bites. With a grim acceptance of what seemed fated to be, Rahela drained the last of her little sister's blood from her veins.

The young girl, barely seven years old, never left her sister's side, and the two youthful vampires soon began to wander Europe in search of sustenance and safe places to stay. After many decades, they wound up in France, where a vampire nobleman by the name of Jacques took them under his wing, adopting the sisters as his own children to take care of.

With this change of life, the two girls were given different names -- "Rahela" became "Remilia", and "Florina" became "Flandre". This marked the era of their wandering coming to a close, and the beginning of their lives as reborn children of nobility.
Some time later, Flandre even gained her own sort of caring and loving "nanny": the head maid and Remilia's personal attendant, Sakuya.

Of course, it wasn't quite all so simple as that.

Flandre was a rather odd child, as something had noticeably changed about her ever since she had become a vampire. Her sweet nature was still very much there, at least around her older sister, but spontaneous, violent urges would occasionally emerge around people she didn't trust. Her feeding became more violent and without any care for the victim, leading her to drain her meals dry, or to even start ripping their flesh off to feed upon while her prey still breathed.

What seemed to be a terrible insanity of sorts had wedged its way into her personality.
Even when she wasn't hungry, Flandre would lash out at the servants in the house, tearing their arms off or using her terrible magical powers to make them explode -- and even seeming to find it all a very fun game.

Thankfully, she always seemed a great much more stable around her older sister, and had been taught not to attack her nanny, who was notably human.. but that simply wasn't enough.
After the time she broke a window and was nearly incinerated by the sun's rays, her residence was permanently moved to the basement, for her own safety and the safety of others.

Even after many centuries and the move of their mansion home to a new world entirely, Flandre still spends a great majority of her time down below the floorboards.

It's really quite a treat to her, as she gets a great many rooms all to herself. She creates great big tangles of blankets to sleep in, has plenty of space to keep her toys, and does what she wants at her leisure. There is always plenty of tasty food to eat, too!
The best part about it all is that both Remilia and Sakuya visit her every day, telling her about their days and playing all sorts of little games. They even allow her to come upstairs every so often, as long as she stays close.

But, sometimes, she'll get stressed out for one reason or another, or just get too unwilling to wait to see her two favorite people again. In this case, Flandre uses her brute strength to smash and tear her way out of the basement, snapping the chains and locks with her hands.
Sometimes she just wanders around upstairs, or sometimes she'll go on little rampages of sorts if something distresses her -- but it's not just the threat to belongings and furniture that's a concern.

The Scarlet Devil Mansion regularly throws big parties and has a multitude of visitors over.. and sometimes things go horribly wrong.

Anybody Flandre doesn't know is asked one question:

"Play with me?"

Flandre has exactly three groups that she puts people into: her two caretakers, the people who live in the mansion that she can only play nicely with, and then complete strangers, who she isn't given any rules for.

Since she doesn't really know when to stop when it comes to playing violently, there's really no saving the poor, unfortunate souls that Flandre encounters from time to time. Driven by predatory instincts and a sweet child's carelessness for others, she tears through these strangers like butter with her extreme amount of supernatural strength -- there's only been two or three people who've managed to come out alive.

As such, Flandre remains a secret to a great many people, hiding in the depths of the Scarlet Devil Mansion. Perhaps it's best that way, as while she's very curious about the world outside her home, she's also rather scared of it, as well.

The Reason for the Wings

Unlike her older sister, Flandre never grew wings after being transformed into a vampire. During transformation, most humans bitten by a Painted Devil Bat will develop large, batlike wings that are capable of flight -- but Flandre simply never grew them.
It's still a mystery surrounding the reason, although the scholar of the mansion hypothesizes that it may be from the "glitch" that happened during Flandre's turning.

Of course, Flandre wasn't satisfied with this answer. She wanted to be able to flutter around and be able to chase after Remilia in airborne tag: so she came up with an idea. During one of her visits to the upper floor, she smashed one of the large stained-glass windows and gathered up the pieces that fell, ignoring anything that anyone asked.

Once back downstairs, she began to tear open the wall and plaster, ripping pieces of metal reinforcement from the ceiling above.. and causing part of the dining room floor to collapse while she was at it.
Taking the glass shards and the bent iron bars up in her hands and applying a ridiculous little child's creativity to them, she put them together and then proceeded to jam them through her back, nonchalant as could be.

Miraculously, she was just fine after the initial pain and bleeding, as the metal hadn't managed to pierce any vitals.
Even though some members of her "family" raised a brow at the ordeal, Flandre was perfectly happy with her new wings, not seeming to grasp the idea that they couldn't catch the air and fly.

In fact, some time afterwards, Patchouli was kind enough to actually enchant the wings so they would be capable of flight.
Those wings were also modified with ball joints so that they could flutter and flap like real wings.

Along with giving Flandre the ability to swerve and dart about in the air like a carnivorous hummingbird, they also emit a soft glow from the glass pieces that are hung from them. There's the theory that they store excess magical energy inside them, saved up for later endeavors; they also act as a sort of visual communication, lighting up and wavering with Flandre's emotions.
The others who live in the Scarlet Devil Mansion have quickly picked up this odd sort of light-based language, learning to relax when the lights glow steadily or to hit the deck when they start to flicker.

Meanwhile, Flandre just thinks they're pretty.

Laevateinn, the Wounding Wand

During the earlier years when Remilia and Flandre still lived in the outside world, they eventually wandered north in their search for fresh blood and a warm place to stay. Through their travels, they wound up in Scandinavia, where they decided to stay the night at an inn. The innkeeper regarded them in a curious way, mumbling to himself that they were "the girls from his dream". To pass the time until they would sleep, he told Flandre and Remilia of native lore, talking of the Norse legends, gods and mythical monsters. Eventually, their vampiric nature was revealed to him when Remilia's cloak was torn, and the man shrunk back in fear -- but then he said that he expected this all along.

He eventually lead them to a back room and opened two display cases: one that held a crystalline red lance, and then one that held a twisted metal staff. "These are for you two," he said, offering the lance to Remilia, and the staff to Flandre.
"As the weapons of the gods, they have been passed down through my family, and we have all been waiting for their new owners. I have had dreams all my life that I would give Odin's spear, Gungnir, and Loki's wand, Laevateinn, to girls who looked just like you two.."

These two weapons both buzzed with a huge amount of magical power that Remilia and Flandre learned to control, as they would be able to summon the weapons when they needed them. Remilia gained very swift understanding and control of Gungnir, using it as a throwing weapon or using it to create brilliant red flames.

Flandre, however, almost seemed to be a little bit corrupted by Laevateinn's influence. She learned how to properly use the hellfire that Laevateinn would spew everywhere when she channeled her powers into it, and it was about this time that she started to show mental deterioration. An extremely devastating weapon in her hands, Laevateinn can shoot focused, high-energy whips and beams of fire that can melt or burn away nearly anything on contact. The flames seem to have corrupting or poisonous properties, as wherever it scorches, plants won't grow back for decades.

That's not all-- Flandre claims it talks to her sometimes. It whispers in a language she can't understand, but she says it's comforting whenever it speaks in the back of her mind. Whether or not it truly is one of the sources behind her chaotic and spontaneous behavior is still up in the air, as Flandre doesn't seem capable of giving a good answer.

A beautiful, sprawling mansion, painted all in red.

If there was no thought given to the thought that it was a vampire's home, it had an unparalleled beauty. Bats carved of stone, plush red carpets, flower gardens full of roses, and ornate windows that let the moonlight shine through-- a perfect mansion in every respect.

And then there's that one door in the very back.
It's as beautiful as any other cherrywood door in the house, of course.

On the front, carved into the wood, it reads, in all capital letters, "DO NOT ENTER".

The staircase beyond it spirals into the depths.

It goes down only two stories, but without any lighting, it may as well be some horrific light-devouring abyss.

At the landing, there's another door-- this one is far different, made of solid steel. Riddled with all manners of padlocks and chains, it'd be a fool's errand to wrestle it open without the proper key.

Today, it sits ajar, chains and locks left undone.

Beyond that door is just more darkness. The stone stairs give way to soft carpet in the suggestion that this is just another room of the house.

The overwhelming stench of blood seems to be soaked into both the flooring and the walls. It almost stings the senses, salty and metallic and reeking of death...

There's objects littered across the floor.
Plastic tea cups with dark stains striping them, tiny chipped plates, a stuffed rabbit with a missing ear--

A giggle pierces through the suffocating silence. Tiny footsteps dart across the carpet, coming closer with every second.

Sixteen lights shimmer in the darkness. Two blue, two green, two yellow, two orange, two pink, two purple, two navy, two blue-green: a cheery pair of rainbows in the doom and gloom.

A little figure wanders into view -- a child, barely four feet tall.
The colorful lights are attached to her back. They wave to and fro slowly, like some freak mockery of wings crossed with Christmas lights.

Her eyes glow a terrifying red in the darkness, barely shaded by her blonde hair, and her curious smile turns into a grin, showing pearly fangs--

She lifts her right hand as she excitedly runs forward, fingernails overgrown into long claws, and she forms that hand into a fist.

A sudden surge of pain, like white-hot lightning, burns the body from the inside out, and the world goes black.

That is how the story goes for most.

They have the terrible luck to get lost in the Scarlet Devil Mansion during a party, they find the door in the back, and they grow curious.
It isn't long until they wander into territory they should have never set foot in.. and they never return.

Little Flandre Scarlet calls the basement of the mansion her home. Forever locked in a childish youth by her vampiric nature, her quarters resemble an asylum.

She doesn't know her own strength, and may never understand the full scope of her terrifying powers, which can destroy anything in the blink of an eye. Flandre barely even knows how to feed from humans in a "proper" fashion-- instead, she rips them apart with her bare hands, hungrily slurping up all the blood she can get at.

Her unorthodox transformation into a vampire warped her mind forever. Along with her mind, which will never mature, she could be called insane, quickly going back and forth between docile behavior and destructive tantrums.

A danger to both others and herself, Flandre rarely socializes with anyone else, and is only allowed visits by her sister and sister-in-law.

She loves them both dearly, and often leaves the basement under their supervision. Sometimes she goes to sit down at the table to have a proper meal with the rest of the "family"-- and, very rarely, gets to go outside on warm summer nights, given she behaves.

Despite being the mysterious little secret of the Scarlet Devil Mansion, and a bit of a needy secret indeed, Flandre couldn't ask for a better life.
