"The Sands of Time never run out...and if they do, you won't be around to see it"

Oh, how he wished that were true. It wasn't that he wanted to die, oh no. Just that he would be afraid to see the world when those grains did empty. And he would, thanks to the witch's curse.

"Ohh...Jasperl, I'm so, so sorry...I think." Emalinda had said. "I've given you the longest longevity of all...the curse of the Eternal Hourglass."

In her defense, she was a novice witch. And he was very stingy back then. He had asked for long life, to win a bet against his friend, but she had confused two archaic words of Heridrom; Etundra and Elungria. If he was still alive, Tobrias would owe him twenty million pence, ten times over.

He sighed, growing quiet and looking into his mind's eye. There was the huge hourglass that had been stationary in his mind thousands of years ago, like a doomsday screensaver in his head. It didn't have nearly enough sand at the top like when it started, but there was still a healthy amount. The bottom held a lot more, however. Each grain counted for fifty years. Sometimes, the grains seemed to fall faster, two or three a day. The world's lifespan was being cut down, but by what, he didn't know.

His mind wandered, and in a flash, he remembered what his friend Jinjet had said, five hundred years ago. The Mahar had finished crafting a beautiful sword to use in combat. As he presented it to a personal servant of a feudal lord, he recited.;
"Wherever I go, everyone is a little bit safer because I am there. Wherever I am, anyone in need has a friend. Whenever I return home, everyone is happy I am there."
That had been his personal motto ever since. His favorite quote, imprinted on his heart.

Wanting to cheer himself up from gloomy thoughts, he rolled over to his computer, jiggled the mouse, and with a few well-aimed clicks, brought up the document that held his life's work. He read the first quote on the page;
