Chase grew up attending Seminary school before he became a doctor, and was raised Catholic. He left the school for unknown reasons, but it is thought that he does not believe entirely in religion as his logic tends to override belief. He does however, pray occasionally and a quote from him describes how he feels; "I don't know what I believe, but sometimes I need to think there's something out there paying attention, so when I can't talk to anybody, I talk to God and pretend somebody's listening."

He was never really on good terms with his dad, Rowan. Since the man left Chase and his mother by themselves when Chase was fifteen, the boy was left to care for his newly-alcoholic mother who began drinking herself quite literally to death, dying five years later. Although Chase attempted many times to bridge the gap in the relationship between himself and his father, nothing seemed to change the older man's attitude; he just didn't seem interested. Even though Rowan had a lot of money whilst alive, Chase himself is not rich - he was cut out of his dad's will two months before he died of terminal lung cancer, in which time Chase was trying more than ever to make amends. Perhaps because of his mother's alcohol-induced death, Chase developed a heavy dislike for substance abusers.

Alison Cameron and Robert Chase were married a few years into a friendly relationship when the two finally both admitted their feelings for one another, but unfortunately their relationship - and marriage - were short-lived, as when Chase admitted to his newly-wed that he had committed a murder (of a brutal African dictator, leading him to believe he was saving thousands of lives by doing so) Cameron was unable to cope with the news and left him broken hearted.

The thirty year old male tends to be intensely secretive, not often revealing things about his past or himself at all, but it is known that he is severely allergic to strawberries which was discovered when he went into anaphylactic shock upon coming into contact with strawberry body butter during his bachelor party. He also is extremely protective of his job and will do anything to save it if it is put in jeopardy. It is surprising that despite his dark past, he can be mostly quite an optimistic and positive person. He is also bright and quick to pick up on things and is particularly good at tenpin bowling.

Dr. Chase is very loyal to Dr. Gregory House, usually completely trusting him with his wild theories even when his fellow colleagues doubt and even try to prove him wrong. Although he no longer works for House any more after getting fired for an outburst, he still drops in to give advice and help out on certain cases with Cameron and Foreman.
