Mommy always had a way of explaining things in a way that I could understand. Everyone said because of my age I wouldn’t understand – and they were right. I didn’t understand why this monster called Oil was trying to kill us or why it was so angry that we had to leave our home and things behind but it must be getting stronger because all of the fish we used to eat are vanishing and everyone is scared. They should be! Oil is eating them to get bigger and stronger, just like mommy said I would when I ate them. Well, she used to anyways.

We swam and we swam – for miles we swam trying to escape the monsters grasp. But it was quick so we couldn’t stay in one place for very long without waking up to see the thick, black monster glistening in the morning sunlight. We were tired and very hungry – most of the fish we ate had disappeared. Some days mommy would have to look for hours and hours before she would find any food to bring home and more often than not she wouldn’t have any for herself. It’s more important for you to eat, honey she’d tell me.

Mommy was sick. Only I didn’t know it until it was too late.

It had been two months since we left home and mommy promised one day soon we would be able to go home. I had learned a lot about the monster Oil, too. It isn’t really a monster but something the humans use and it was their fault oil was killing our food, the other sea creatures, plants and even other mermaids! I don’t like humans very much – it’s their fault Mommy and I go hungry every day… Mommy was growing very tired and she must be even hungrier than I am so she suggested we swim to shore and stay – just until she was rested. I agreed.

A week had come and past and mommy was scaring me. She didn’t move, not even an inch, since she fell asleep and I had to stay close by to ensure the seagulls didn’t peck at her anymore. I wash her daily since she doesn’t go into the water anymore she was starting to stink. I told her this but I don’t think she heard me…
It’s scary out here when mommy’s asleep.

I think mommy's forgotten about me.
I had fallen asleep -- only for a short while, I promise -- and when I woke up she was gone! At first I was so happy because I thought she had went out to find us something to eat... The monster in my tummy was so hungry he constantly growled at me and some times, when my tummy started hurting really badly, I thought he'd began to eat me! But when the sun started to set I'd started to walk up and down the shoreline crying, Mommy? Mommy where are you? I'm scared mommy, please come back, but she never answered me.

Mommy isn't coming back for me.
A man that smelt of fishes told me so. He told me mommy had to go somewhere I couldn't yet go to but when it was my time she would be there to greet me. I was confused but mostly sad. He told me I shouldn't be, that mommy was in a better place and she wouldn't want me to be sad for her, but I couldn't help it! He then said he knew a very nice man named Raeneif that would take good care of me, just like mommy did, but I would have to live in a place called an orphanage. He also said there would be other kids there that I could play with, but I couldn't help but be scared...
