Everybody has a dream. You may have forgotten what that dream was or given up on that dream, but still you did dream once. I dream of lights. I dream of the cries of adoring fans. I dream of the feel of metal beneath my finger nails as I pluck away at the cords. Firstly though, I dream of the sound of my soul pouring forth from the little black boxes that are fueled by the guitar in my hands. I dream of music.
#pet_desc {text-align: justify;}I was born at an American base in Japan. My mother was Japanese and my father was an American Soldier that was stationed there. I grew up with discrimination from both my mother’s and my father’s people, it seemed as if I did not fit in any where. It was like music found me. I didn’t have many friends in school. I didn’t have many friends on the base. I was an outsider in my own world. I was lost. I thought this was just how things were suppose to be for a long time, that someone like me was just not meant to be loved. Torn. My mother saw that I was unhappy and thought that if I was more active in after school programs that I might find something…anything…to fill that void in my life. After trying the sports club, the martial arts club, the chess club, and the math club, I joined the Music club. I never picked up an instrument before in my entire life, but a girl there took pity on me. She would invite me over after the club meeting to listen to all different kinds of music and she taught me what she knew of the piano and violin. She opened the door for me. I began to explore music on my own, and my exploration went to new heights the summer of my sophomore year.
My father was excited that I had found an interest in music. He told me about how when he was young that he would go to concerts all the time. I asked him if I could go to concerts and he said he would think about it. The girl who opened the door invited me every week to go to local shows that teenagers could attend. Rock and Roll, Pop, Metal, and Techno all became my influences when I began to write my own music. One summer day I woke up to find my father waiting for me at the kitchen table. He had purchased concert tickets to a band that I secretly liked. He had two tickets, one for me and one for him. It was a magical time. Just before school started, I had my birthday. That’s when I got my first guitar, my first love.
