The start of my friendship...

The massive blue body of the Mahar moved, his orange eyes opened up glowing slightly in the cave where he was spread out. He stretched his legs and yawned massively. Shaking his head he slowly got up and trotted out of the cave to where the sun shone brightly near the sea sore. His cave was located in a cove, where the water was blue green and clean. The rocks of his cave he claimed as his home were black, but had soft colored shells and bright coral growing around it, or ded in the stone. This was his home, his realm. And it was lovely, he would not live anywhere else. No one ever came to where he lived, and he liked it that way. He had friends who were creatures of the sea, and that was all he needed.

He shifted and the stones ded in his body glistened as if they were just polished. He stepped his way down the path of rocks to the shore. He stepped onto the sands and looked around, something was off, but he was not sure what. Moving along the rolling waves, with the only sounds he could hear from the waves and the gulls he watched the sands. Soon foot prints of a human appeared. He was unhappy about this, someone came to his home, his realm and without asking walked on his beach.

With a snarl he walked following the foot prints and came to a girl in a sun dress. He studded her before he moved closer to make sure that she was not armed. All he could see was the soft yellow of the sundress she wore and the darker color of her skin. Her hair was long, pulled back into a tight braid and white. She was sitting on the beach watching the waves. The foot prints stopped with her, and he knew she was the one who came to his beach without asking him. He snarled and bared his teeth at her.

The girl looked over with red eyes and smiled at him. She tilted her head and studded him back, which confused him for a moment. Why was she not scared. He was bigger then her. He roared in anger and she stood. Finally a reaction.

"Hello!" She said to him which made him pause. She sounded happy, and was still smiling at him.

He growled and crouched down snarling again at her. A warning to leave. But she was not leaving. She just stood there and smiled at him. What was with this human! Did she not know that this was his home! That she was not welcomed here?

"I am Syrus. It is nice to meet you." She said with a giggle. Red eyes looking at him hands behind her back. "Would you like to be my friend?" She asked. "If you are my friend then I can protect you and take care of you. Would you like that?" She asked.

He paused and was not sure what to do. He did not need her protection. He could care for himself. It was she who needed protection. Did she not know that he could swallow her in one bit? She still did not seem to fear him.

"Do you have a name?" She asked, and he stopped. He tilted his head. This human wanted to know his name, but yet he was aggressive to her. Why would she still want this from him when he was so aggressive. "You don't have a name do you?" She asked. "Then I shall name you." She declared with a smile. "Guardian Lei, the Dragon or water." She said with a smile.

He stared at her. She just named him? But he had his own name. One he gave himself. But then, it was something from someone. A name that someone else gave him. He had never been given something so important from another. "Do you need time to think of my offer Guardian Lei?" She asked. "I promise you can have all the time you need. I will be back tomorrow and you can tell me what you choose. Or the next day. I will be back til you agree to be my friend." She said. And as the sun started to set, she ran off. He watched her leave and shook his head.

Turning he looked to the setting sun, watching as it glistened on the water. Be her friend, could a human really be a good friend to a creature such as he. He shook his head and headed back to the cave. He was sure that she would not return. He looked to the pond pool in the cave that he had dug for his fish friends and laid his head down to watch them swim. They swam in circles and he sighed eyes closing and sleeping now for the day.

He slept the night away sure the human would not return. He woke and stretched. Checking his friends he made sure they could eat, then headed out to the shore, looking for food himself. When he arrived to the spot the girl had been the day before, she was there. And it seemed with a picnic as well. She looked over to him and smiled brightly. "Hello again, are you hungry? I have plenty to share." She said and offered him food.

He was surprised. She had enough to feed him and herself. He could not pass up a free meal. It was better then hunting for hours. When she was willing to feed him. He joined her laying down, and she put the food where he could eat it. "I told you I would be back. Til you have an answer for me." She said with a smile and started to eat her own meal. He watched her as he began his.

For weeks this is how it went. The human girl came and offered him food, or something else. Asked nothing more then if he had made a choice. Asked if he was willing to be her friend. She was there, every day. She was smiling and happy. She did not seem to be upset when he had no answer. But he also could no longer be upset at her. He had not known til he met her, how lonely he really had been. He went to the shore at the end of the second month, and she was there. Those bright red eyes and she smiled at him.

"Hello there Guardian Lei, will you be my friend?" She asked. Something was different this day. Something was off. She seemed sad today and he wondered why. He moved close and pushed his nose to her stomach. She smiled and touched his head, "Do not worry about me. My sadness will pass." She said.

He knew now though, that he was her friend. All the weeks of her asking and just spending time with him he had not seen what was happening. That he had started to care for this human. "Young human girl Syrus," He started his voice deep and soft. A rumble from his throat. "I will be your friend and already am. But you must never lie to me or hide anything from me."

Her eyes lit up a little and she smiled. "Oh I will not lie to you Guardian Lei. Nor will I hide anything from you. Thank you for being my friend!" She said hugging him. It was strange to him, he had never had anyone hug him. But it was nice. He lifted a leg and wrapped his paw around her holding her to himself. And he felt something in his heart, a warm feeling that he knew was from the friendship she offered.
