The dark had a way of freaking Willow out, especially when she was on Oz watch. It was usually just Willow and a locked up werewolf, alone in the library while everyone else patrolled. Most of the lights in the building were turned off, save the library lights and a few hallways here and there. Willow would usually curl up with a book and read until morning, jumping at every slight noise and the occasional Oz growl.

But not tonight.

Tonight Willow was forced to sit on edge, staring half the time and wereOz and half at Cordelia, who was sitting perched on the library table and watching Oz with sparkling fascination. Willow had to make sure to stay at least ten feet away at all times. Now was not a good time for a panic attack.

Oz lay on the book cage floor, sleeping quite contently in a way Willow envied. Cordelia leaned forward an inch more and whispered, "He's real well trained isn't he?"

"He's gotten better over time," Willow found herself answering. "Used to be he spent all night howling at the top of his lungs and banging his head on the book cage door. I think Oz is gaining more control now. Which is nice since I don't have to worry so much about him breaking out."

Cordy tilted her head to look better at the redhead. That was probably the most she'd heard Willow speak in a year or two. And all that hidden affection Cordy could detect in Willow's voice: how... cute.

"You got a crush on him or something?" Cordelia asked bluntly. She smirked at the rush of color that instantly appeared on Willow's face.

"N-no!" Willow protested. She really didn't. It was just... how could she not have affection towards a fellow warrior for good? They'd do anything for each other. They were partners after all.

"Mmmmmm-hm!" Cordelia intoned, dragging out the sound to indicate her skepticism. Anyone could see the dog adored her, so in some way Willow probably returned the feelings.

"What are you doing here anyway?" Willow snapped angrily. "You don't care about anyone but yourself! We saved your neck, so go away already!

Cordy recoiled in alarm. The words stung more than she had been prepared for. She struggled to think of a comeback but found she had none. Clenching her jaw in anger she retorted, "Fine! You freaks can go on playing superhero, I'm going home where it's safe! I don't know why I wanted to help anyway. I don't even like you!" She hopped to her feet, causing a loud thump and vibration violent enough to wake the dozing Oz. He was on his feet with a threatening bark, looking from girl to girl in confused disorientation.

"Great, now you've woken him. A lot of help you've been!" Willow yelled furiously.

"At least I'm not stuck in some funk about something that happened over a year ago!" Cordy snarled. Willow's eyes widened in alarm. Cordelia sneered at the obvious confirmation. "Yeah," she continued loudly, "Nancy filled me in. Poor little Willow opened the door for a vampire like some stupid child and got fed off for five days. Well boo hoo, at least you're not dead."

Oz was furiously snarling now, so loud that it almost drowned Cordelia out. But Willow heard every word as clear as a scream and they cut her just as deep. "You don't know... anything," Willow stammered, placing her palms hard against her temples. She knew Cordelia probably couldn't hear her over Oz but she continued anyway. "Take that back. Please." Walls started to close in around her, trapping her, suffocating her. Flashes of blood, pain, people dying all around her clouded her thoughts, pushing away her sanity with every image.

But Cordy was too angry, too hurt to register the other girl's pain. She turned on her heel and opened one of the large wooden doors to the library....

and stopped...

A girl, shorter than Cordelia but twice as imposing, stood in the doorway with hands on her hips. Her angry scowl was excentuated by an old scar tracing from the left side of her lip to beneath her left nostril. Her hair was blonde and pulled into an unkept ponytail. She stared at Cordelia for a second, lost interest and proceeded to look critically around her. Her eyes met Willow's and immediately a shiver of recognition went through both of them. Buffy's frown deepened in discomfort. She didn't know this fragile-looking redhead. And the fact that she felt a sudden warmth toward the girl was so foreign it made her queazy.

Removing her gaze quickly from Willow's, her eyes finally rested on the book cage and noticed Oz, who was snarling softly and pawing the floor in annoyance. With practiced precision Buffy's hands flew to her back where a crossbow was holstered. In seconds the crossbow was in her hands and aimed perfectly at Oz's face.

"No!" Willow screamed, registering what was about to happen as soon as Buffy began to raise her hands to grab her weapons. She moved in front of Oz's cage moments before Buffy was about to pull the trigger. Buffy's training enabled her to stop just in time.

"Move," Buffy growled coldly.

"No way," Willow replied. "He's a werewolf, he's human!"

"That's human?" Buffy laughed sharply. She shook her head. "Move. He's a monster."

Willow stood her ground, holding eye contact with Buffy. "No."

Buffy's eyes widened in surprise. No one stood up to her like that. People were afraid of her. They acted as if she was something alien, to be avoided. But this girl was staring her down, acting as if they were peers. Still Buffy kept her crossbow up. Her nerves were screaming at her to pull the trigger, to destroy this beast that was growling at her menacingly.

Cordelia had been watching the scene unfold with mute amazement. Everything had happened too quickly for her to understand. But she knew this girl, this stranger, was threatening harmless Oz. She stepped forward hesitantly. "Hey, Xena, chillax for a second. Oz is a cream puff. It's not his fault he's all hairy and smelly three nights a month."

Buffy turned to her in disbelief. Two people opposing her now? The princess standing up to her had her hand on her waist and was thrusting her hip out in what Buffy recognized as the telling Queen Bee posture of popular kids. It was a posture of power in high school, but to Buffy it no longer meant anything. The fact that she was using it on her bemused Buffy.

"Look," Buffy said impatiently, "I'm the Slayer. I know about these things. So listen to me when I say that thing needs to be destroyed."

"What the heck is a Slayer and why should we care," Cordelia demanded.

"Quiet, Cordy," Willow said softly. Cordelia turned her glare toward Willow but she kept her mouth shut. Willow's eyes were still locked on Buffy. "You're the Slayer. Ok... we need you. But not for this We know what we're doing here with Oz. He's our responsibility. Now put down your weapon so we can talk."

Buffy hesitantly lowered her bow and Willow smiled and stepped away from the cage to properly greet her. In an instant the crossbow was back up and a bolt was flying toward Oz. "NO!" Willow howled as her eyes went black with fury. The bolt disintegrated in midair as magick flowed around her, pulsing and angry. Buffy's jaw dropped as Willow walked towards her, face contorted in rage. Buffy prepared to fire another bolt but hesitated. She could not bring herself to hurt this girl. She... she cared about this girl.

Willow marched toward Buffy but seeing the look on Buffy's face her anger disappeared. Willow knew she had meant no harm. Willow felt a rush of love for this girl. She stopped before getting too close and smiled shyly. "I'm Willow."

"Buffy..." the Slayer supplied.

And the argument was over.

Buffy looked warily at Oz who had quieted and was staring at her with a look of unnerving intelligence. He let out a bark and started running around the perimeter of his enclosure. Buffy flinched. She didn't like demons. They'd caused so much damage to her life. But she trusted Willow's judgement for some reason she couldn't explain.

Willow followed Buffy's gaze and grinned affectionately at Oz. "That's Oz. He'll be back to normal in the morning, but he's got two more nights of this." She gestured toward Cordelia. "And that's Cordelia. She's-" Willow paused, unsure of how to proceed. A flash of Cordy sticking up for Oz, trying to protect him too, made her shift uncomfortably. "A friend."

Buffy looked at Cordy and the girl raised a well manicured hand in acknowledgement. "Maybe next time you meet people you could try not attacking them. It'll make them dislike you less. Probably." Willow rolled her eyes. As usual Cordelia had no idea how insulting she was being. Buffy stared at Cordelia in mute amazement.

Oz had stopped running and was now laying down and staring at the girls making impatient snuffles and growls every few seconds. His eyes were drooping and he kept blinking to try and stay awake.

"Sooo..." Buffy began, keeping one watchful eye on Oz. "Why am I here?"

"We've got vampires crawling out of the woodwork. Some crazy king vamp took over a few years ago." Cordelia supplied as she walked back to the table, no longer looking to leave.

"He's called the Master," Willow added. "He's one of the oldest vampires in the world. There are records of him almost all throughout known history. His minions have killed... almost a fifth of our town. Everyone here knows about vampires now and we all have to hide. We need your help."

Buffy was silent in amazement for a minute. She blinked once, twice, and finally managed, "Why don't... you all just move? What are you, morons??? Get the hell out of here!"

Willow and Cordelia let their jaws drop and Cordy's face flushed in anger. "Run away? This is our home. We're not cowards!"

"What the fuck? Running away from a vampire isn't cowardice, you stupid bitch," Buffy yelled in frustration. "It's the same consept as running away from a damn lion!"

"Stop it," Willow said quietly and to her surprise Buffy turned to her, looking to her as if she would hold the answer to Sunnydale's stupidity. "Cordelia's right, that's how most of the town feels. Us kids are stuck here because of our parents," Willow said. Her throat closed up at the thought of her parents. She cleared her throat. "I mean... most of us... we've got things to stay for." The thought of Xander tugged at her emotions again. "Some of us fight for the humans of this town. They need protection you know?"

By then Buffy was shaking her head. "Not from you. You're just a teen!"

"So are you!" Willow accused.

"No, I'm not. I'm the Slayer," Buffy snapped. She squared her shoulders and gave her best commanding stare to Willow. To her utter amazement Willow didn't bat an eye.

"How old are you?" Willow asked.

Buffy scowled. "Seventeen."

"Me too," Willow said triumphantly.

"No! We're different. I'm the Slayer. You have no idea what I've been through." Buffy felt her cheeks flare and she looked down at her hands. Scars decorated her palms and fingers like tattoos, snaking around and up her forearms. She looked up at Willow and noticed for the first time scars peppering the left side of the girl's neck, just peeking out of the girls sweat shirt.

"I've... a lot has happened here too. we're all veterans in this supernatural world. Trust me," Willow softly replied, looking at Oz sadly.

"Wow... OK, whatever freaks. If it was me I'd have left when the first body hit the floor. Leave the stupid humans to be naturally selected. You're actually choosing this life? I'd give anything to give it up." Buffy walked over to the counter and hopped up onto the surface, facing the three Sunnydale White Hats.

Cordelia rolled her eyes. "Oh boo hoo. You're life's been sucky we get it. We haven't had cake walks either. Willow here can't get within two feet of a person." To demonstrate Cordy scooted closer to the redhead and reached a hand out to touch her. Willow flinched and scampered a few feet away. "See? Like a little mouse," Cordy teased.

"Cordelia what the heck!" Willow yelled furiously as she wrapped her arms around herself. She was blushing, humiliated in front of the stranger watching her from across the library.

"I'm just saying!" Cordelia countered. "She's not the only damaged goods in the room. You're as crazy as they come, witchy."
