Hattie was first noticed because of her astounding beauty; Gavroche spotted her on a street corner where she was busking for just a few pennies a day.

Hattie's home life was always a struggle, four sisters and three brothers ensured that her Mum spent her days 'grinding the axe' to make ends meet, and she didnt let the children forget it! Hattie never went hungry thanks to her elder brothers, they had steady jobs, a rare thing in these times, and they looked after the familie's food fund.
The family were taught to fend for themselves at an early age; Hattie could cook and sew, wash and clean, and, of course, look after her sisters who were always getting into trouble.
It was only natural then that Hattie would dream of a day when the whole world could see her perform, a day when she wouldn't be dependent on her family...

It was midday and Hattie had just finished her noon performance when she was approached by the large and lecherous looking man who went by the name of Gavroche:

"Your talent Mademoiselle! I have never before seen the likes of it in London! I must have you, you must come work for me!"

"Thank you for your words kind sir, but I do not believe my talent is nearly as good as you say, pray tell, who are you to recognise talent?"

"Vous ne me reconnaissez pas? Oh dear oh dear, but Mademoiselle, I am the great Gavroche! I own the theatre one street over, surely you have heard of my name? Come come ma jolie, I will take you to my theatre, we are going to put you on stage, there will be scripts written just for you and everyone will know your name!"

It all sounded too good to be true, but Hattie was young and naive and easily distracted by the promise of riches and after all-too-little questioning she happily followed Gavroche.

As the mismatched pair walked through the streets Gavroche talked and spun stories to ensnare the young girl.
Travelling through numerous back alleys and avoiding many unsavoury people, for 'one street over' infact turned out to be right on the outskirts of town, they arrived at the run down building Gavroche called a theatre.
Of course by now it didn't matter to Hattie, daydreaming of her name all over the papers she was willing to believe every word Gavroche told her...
