Amelia Altostratus had wanted a cat since forever. Or so it seemed to her twelve-year old mind. In truth, the first cat she'd ever seen had crossed her path only two months ago, at one of the rare land dockings her family's airship made. As the oldest of four children and the heir to her father Avery's business, Amelia was the only child deemed old enough or responsible enough to accompany the lightning-traders onto the ground for haggling. The cat she had seen, a pitiful looking gray tom, had sparked her interest unlike anything she'd ever seen on her two previous excursions onto the earth's surface. The family policy, however, said no pets on the airship. The next three weeks saw Amelia scribbling furiously on fragments of parchment nearly every waking moment that she didn't have to spend apprenticed to her father, followed by five weeks of near seclusion and elusive answers as to what her secret project was. And then came the day when the sound of clockwork whirling in perfect harmony brought a rare smile to Amelia's face. Hello, Clockwork, Amelia whispered, causing the mechanical cat sitting on the table to turn towards her and grind the gears in it's throat, producing a sound that came disturbingly close to a purr.

Seven years later, Amelia has all but taken over her family's ship, The Windfinder. All that remains is a ceremony meant to take place during the next lightning storm, in which she will collect lighting by herself for the first time. Though nervous, Amelia is ready to take on the role of captain, and proud to be following in the footsteps of her father and grandfather.
But as the clouds began to stir in the dance that the lightning-traders know means there's work to be done, Amelia's youngest sister Claire caught Avery's attention and said, Three ships, father. And coming on fast.
Who do you think they are, Father? Amelia asked with worry coloring her voice.
There are only two possibilities, Daughter, neither of which are particularly good for us, he said. Either they are part of the Royal Air Navy come to inspect our records, or they are pirates come to steal our lightning. Since they fly no flags, I suspect they are the later. With a nod to his crew that sent them all scurrying, Avery set about the nearly impossible task of trying to outrun three smaller, faster ships.
Emma, Clair, Abigail, Amelia... all of you go to your solo ships. No arguments! We have very little time, and the likelihood of this encounter ending in our favor... Avery trailed off as he turned away from his four daughters with a worried frown knotting his brow. The simple fact that their father had not finished his sentence struck fear into the hearts of the four girls like nothing else could have, and sent Claire and Emma into hysterics.
Shh, calm down girls. It'll be okay, came the soothing voice of their mother.
Olivia, get the girls' things packed and into their ships, please, came the ever steady voice of Avery from his post at the wheel.
Of course, dear, Olivia replied to her husband of nearly twenty-five years. Come along, girls. We need to get your things packed up and settled with your ships. Come along now, she said gently, leading her daughters away.

What is going on? Is everything really going to be okay...? Father hasn't encountered pirates since before I was born, and he looked so worried. Thoughts skittered across Amelia's mind as
