The old carousels always had rings. Rings that descended from the ceiling of the carousel, just out of arm's reach. All steel... Except for one or two. Those two were made of bronze.
Old Urban legends dictated that if a bronze rings were grabbed, something good would happen. But between you and me, I'd leave old carousels like this well enough alone. I don't trust the look in those glassy eyes of the animals. They are like predators, waiting for prey. You don't believe me, do you? Come back at sundown. As the shades of twilight touch the metal of the carousel, you'll see what I mean. Just don't get seen in that old garden, or the price will be dire.

As the sun sets, the old carousel creaked, the metal moaning and wailing almost like it was made of flesh, not metal. The steel shrieks as the carousel spins slowly to the left, and then stops. And then stepping to life in the gloom of the forgotten garden, seemingly powered by nothing, the horse itself with oil dripping like blood from joints, reaches up and grabs the brass ring. Slowly, the other animals comes to life similarly, snapping their poles free or in some cases simply sliding off like a body impaled, stepping out of the bounds of the metal stage with whirs and clicks of clockwork machinery and the slow hiss of steam, eyes glowing ominously in the shade of twilight. These truly were monsters. And if they knew you were there, there was no doubt in your mind that you'd mercilessly be killed. It was time to get out of here.

...

Once upon a time, there was a sharp increase of science and intellect in this society. As things progressed so rapidly, science corrupted. What was the value of life if scientists could become gods? But to become gods, one must understand the working of machine and animal both. Schools, secret to others opened in Darkside, universities where the students were to practice the illicit "mad science" and learn just this. Male students from across the globe swarmed into these hidden schools, and one in particular was known to be quite prestigious. But everything changed the moment a female student enrolled. It wasn't as if she was first, but she admittedly was different.

She looked like your ordinary high-class beauty, with golden ringlets tied up into a bun and and bustled skirts, but the look in her eye was CHALLENGING. She closed her parasol, set it to the ground and leaned on it, taking a look around. All students stopped in their way to classes and stared. Using that parasol as a cane she walked like she OWNED the place, up the steps.

This woman wasn't unknown. Her name was Gloria Snell and she was rather infamous in the science world, in the worst possible ways. Being raised by a family of mad scientists tended to have you committed to sanitariums rather quickly, they said. And trying to raise the dead didn't help. But this was all spoken under hushed whispers as the students hurried off to their various classes.

It wasn't long before Gloria was challenged by male scientists. It didn't matter how advanced or crazy this woman was, that only caused them to want to prove they were better than her by any meaning. A boy made a half-living army of zombie marionettes to swarm her when she walked down the hall. Yet another student made an army of steam-powered miniature planes taking potshots at her whenever she walked down the hall. She casually responded in the best way possible. Which is, creating an army of clockwork carousel animals.

Decidedly, carousel animals were MUCH MORE dangerous than model planes and marionettes and students fled when they saw Gloria Snell riding down the hallway on the back of a particular carousel horse, painted white with green glass eyes that glowed eerily as it paraded down the hallways of the school with its mistress on its back, dripping oil.

"There we go, Icecap." She addressed her clockwork steed, "No more little boys with their little toys trying to take advantage of me, eh?" But being just a clockwork steed, the horse said nothing.
