"Farewell, sweet Rotterdam!" Gustaf called as he waved farewell to the crowded wharf. The cheering and cacophony of port quickly faded as the Eagle slipped out of her berth and into the open channel. Her sails were filled with a strong spring breeze and she quickly slipped towards open water. Her mission, to circle the Earth and record with much precision the correct situation of all ports and islands. To make the trip profitable, they were to bring home precious metals and spices from Africa and India. Silks and rice from the Asias, and sugar from the South Americas.

His Matjy. is pleased to offer you his flagship the Eagle for your proceeding on an Expedition, to improve knowledge of the East and of the Asias, wherein you shall record Longitude and variations of the Compasse. The Shipp is now completely Man'd, Stored and Waiting at his Mats. Charge for said Expedition; you are hereby required and directed, forthwith to proceed with her according to the following Instructions.
You are to make the best of your way Southward along the West Coast of Africa to the Cape of Good Hope, North to India, East through the Asias, Southward to Tahiti and New Zealand, and return to The Netherlands.

It would be a few days port in Maderia, a nervous passage around the top of africa, looking out for moroccan pirates, and on to South Africa.

The Eagle was a fine ship. Built by the best shipbuilders in the Netherlands. Her job was to be easy to built for strength, not agility. Her mission was to simply circumnavigate the earth, and take notes of new discoveries along the way. There was no schedule, but Gustaf hoped to have her home within two years. Little did he know, the trip would last five.
