Ugly things, they were. Disgusting, with no appeal no matter how one looked at them.

They were dark. One could beat it back but it would never be vanquished; it would still exist, no matter how hard one tried.

Desperation drives even the most rational mad. It is a slow torture, gnawing at you, forever taunting. When you are in the midst of your desperation, of those ugly, black things that threaten to overwhelm and drown you, you find her door.

It's not a fancy door. Polished oak in a rich shade of brown, a smooth metal knocker, and two lit candles, one on either side of the door. Gusts of wind make the flames dance side to side, but they never go out. Sometimes light smatterings of rain fall on the door, but, just like with the wind, the flame continues doggedly on, casting their small circles out yellow light out into the open.
