there was a young mother whose newborn son was deathly ill. the lady winter appeared before her and offered to save the child's life, if the woman surrendered the baby to her. the woman was heartbroken, but agreed. the lady restored the child to health and took him away to her castle, where she raised him as her own.

touched by the lady winter's magic, he was able to walk on the softest powdered snow without trampling it, hold a snowflake in the palm of his hand without melting it, and walk on the thinnest ice without cracking it. the lady named him bonhiver, and he had eyes as blue as ice and hair as white as snow.

as bonhiver grew older, he became curious and wished to know more about the mortal realm where he was born. the lady winter, though cold-hearted, loved her son. she allowed him to live amongst humans for two-thirds of the year - her only request was that he spent the remainder of the time with her, bringing winter to the world.
