There are an awful lot of strange noises coming from the room down the hall.
You knock, then knock again harder when nobody seems to hear you over the whirring, clicking and roaring from within. "COME IN!" someone bellows. It's the voice of a person who's been surrounded by loud noises all day. You do so, and are faced with the novel sight of an outlandish creature fiddling with a large, half-finished contraption. Just as the mechanic is a wild mixture of feathers, tentacles and plant features, different parts of the machine are running on a wide variety of power sources. Some appear to have batteries, like most electronics on Subeta, while others are steam-powered like Atebus machinery, and still more sections are built from humming, gently glowing tubes that you've never seen before.
In a flurry of motion, the creature's tentacles drop their tools and shoot out to press buttons, pull levers, and dislocate tubes. The noise ceases, and the strange mechanic turns to you, jagged mouth stretching into a wide smile. It is a sight to behold.
"Hello!" it says. "You can call me Vanadium. You may know that as the element that gives the gemstone tanzanite its distinctive color!"
You shake his tentacle cordially. Something beeps in the corner. Vanadium makes a whistling, clicking sound, and what appears to be a mechanical tarantula (although it moves suspiciously smoothly for a steamwork machine) scuttles out from under a desk and up to what you suppose would be the mechanic's shoulder, if he had one.
"So," he says, gesturing at the gently steaming mechanical hulk on the floor, "I suppose you're wondering what all this is."
"I'm just a freelance explorer, really. I live in just the next solar system over. I flew over to your, er, "neighborhood" to visit a friend on Atebus about two months ago and figured I ought to pop over to Subeta and have a look-see while I was at it. I had some...technical difficulties with my ship. Long story short, I crashed into a hill and now I'm stuck here until I'm finished with repairs." He laughs sheepishly and shrugs. "But honestly, your planet is fantastic!" He whirls around enthusiastically. "Such dynamic plate tectonics! I've never seen such brilliant geology in my life!" He gleefully rubs two tentacles together in much the same way that you might rub your hands together.
You can't help but smile--the enthusiasm of the jolly alien is infectious. He scoops up an unusual rock, a vial of glowing mystery material, and a small terrarium in his various tentacles.
"If you've got the time, I'd be happy to show you my collection!"
