Ntropy's Bad Day

Ntropy nervously lit another cigarette and took a huge drag as if her life depended upon it. With the cigarette stuck haplessly between the digits of her left paw, the ashes left 'unflicked' Ntropy grabbed up her coffee cup and gulped down the rest of it only to have some escape from the corners of her mouth, dribble down her chin and onto her wrinkled nursing uniform. " Oh great! Just swell!" she cursed under her breath, "Typical!" She quickly tossed down the coffee cup, grabbed the wadded napkin on the table and frantically daubed at the coffee stains in vain, smearing strawberry jam on her uniform right on top of the coffee. "Crap!" she yelled at herself and threw the napkin down. As she reached across the small cafe table for a new napkin from the dispenser, she knocked over her water glass and finally lost control of the long ash on the end of her smoke, which landed on her knee, burning a hole in her new nylon hose. Ntropy took a deep breath, ground out the smoke in the ashtray and sat back in her chair, nearly defeated. This was not her best day.

Ntropy worked for the big hospital in Centropolis as a Registered Nurse and was well know and respected for her clinical expertise in caring for trauma and burn victims. Yet despite her experience and skills, it seemed to others that Ntropy had all of the bad luck. If a patient was going to suddenly stop breathing or have a heart attack, it would happen on Ntropy's shift. If a patient was going to suddenly start having internal bleeding, it would take place as soon as Ntropy got out on to the floors, even if that patient had been steadily improving for the last several days. Ntropy was a crap magnet.

To make matters worse, Ntropy had a reputation as a klutz, it seemed that she was always knocking something over, spilling something, dropping her medications. It was not uncommon for her to enter a patient's room only to have the room erupt into a cacophony as something smashed to the ground, awakening the dead. But for all her bad luck, the doctors, staff and even her patients all came to her defense, nobody had actually witnessed Ntropy causing any of the disasters that befell her. It appeared that nature had it out for Ntropy and was bending it's own rules to make her life miserable.

Ntropy had had just such an experience, and she was trying to decide what to do. She had just received a patient from the Emergency Department, a bleeding gastric ulcer, always a dangerous situation, had transfered the patient to his bed in the intensive care unit and hooked him to the monitors. The patient had been reported to be comatose, and that restraints were not needed, a good thing, restraints were seen as controversial these days and she preferred not to use them if possible. Ntropy quickly jotted down the vital signs on the patients bedside chart, gathered up some paper trash, deposited it in the waste can and left the room to print a rhythm strip for the patients chart when the heart monitor alarmed at the nurses station, the patient's heart had stopped! The monitor technician at the nurses station called out to Ntropy, "Your patient is in v-fib!" to which Ntropy replied, "Call a code blue then!

On entering the room, she was horrified to see the patient face down on the floor, all his IV's were pulled out and he wasn't breathing. How could a comatose patient pull out all their IV's and attempt to crawl out of bed in the short amount of time it took for her to leave the room? Within seconds, the code blue team arrived, attempts were made to revive the patient were heroic, but ultimately, unsuccessful. Ntropy was divestated, and her manager told her to go down to the cafeteria, take a break and try to get her head around what happened.

At the end of the day, after all the paperwork was filled out, Ntropy said good night to her friends and colleagues, walked down to Personnel and submitted her resignation and a forwarding address for her paycheck. Maybe it was time to take up her sister's offer to come and live with her in Omen Islands and simplify her life. Maybe she could find a nice pirate to marry. That certainly would be less complicated then what she was already doing...
