The biting wind flowed over the young one's dark scales making her shiver. She pressed her leathery wings against her body but they did little to protect her from the stinging cold. Normally, she would have migrated to warmer climates with others of her kind before any sign of winter's chill but she had been left alone, unable to find her way.
But it was not her mother's fault she was left to fend for herself. Had it not been for them...
She shook the dark memory from her head. She had to be strong now. Picking herself up, she continued her trek down the mountain she once called home. She didn't even know where she was going but she knew she couldn't stay there. Not after what happened. At least outside she stood some chance of catching herself some food and hiding in some abandoned burrow for shelter. This was all wishful thinking, of course. It was a miracle she managed to last as long as she had and she most likely wouldn't even survive the night.
Accepting her fate, the young dragon stopped on a small ledge to look up at the night sky one last time. The stars sparkled like white diamonds against blue-black velvet. Just then, an odd glimmer appeared in the distance. It began as a cloudy spot but quickly grew into a prismatic serpentine curtain, quickly meandering its way through the sky until she was surrounded by color. Pinks, greens, blues, violets and even golds silently soared through the air with no true shape nor purpose and seemed to flit in and out of reality.
As she stared in awe at the beautiful sight before her, something else took shape amongst the flying colors. The dark silhouette glided slowly toward her before silently landing in front of her. The dragon blinked to clear her vision and reveal the graceful equine form now standing before her. A long, violet spiral horn protruded from its forehead and soft feathered wings were now folded against a strong but elegant indigo body. The young dragon had been told of unicorns and the powerful magic that came from their horns but never that they could fly.
"Good evening, child." The creature spoke with a soft, yet strong voice. "Why are you here all alone?"
The question woke the dragon from her reverie. She turned away and said nothing.
