"Welcome, welcome everyone! Welcome to our magical, wondrous park! We thank you for your patronage! At our amusement park (solely for your amusement of course) we offer thrilling rides, exciting shows, and more! Come, come; enter and discover the adventure and magic that awaits you!"
Rourke is one of several ASPWs, or Artificial Service and Performance Workers, at a high end theme park. He was built specifically to work there and thoroughly enjoys what he does. Sometimes he works the snack stands, sometimes he plays a greeter, and still other times he performs in various skits across the park. Seeing the happy park-goers brings him happiness; still, something has been missing.
"I say these lines each day, yet still the patrons leave at closing; many do not return for months, even years. Why should they wish to leave? This park is amazing; the people who come are always so filled with joy, smiles and laughter abound... so why leave? Why do they not stay here? If they leave each day, their world outside the park must truly be ever more amazing. Why else would they leave? If the outside world is that fantastic... then I, too, wish to experience it! It must be the most magnificent place."
He does not realize that the outside world is not the utopia he thinks it is; nevertheless, he wishes to see it all and dreams of the day he will take his first steps out of the park's gates and into the great unknown! Collecting a variety of travel guides, maps, and other information about locations on the outside, Rourke has a lengthy list of places he intends to go; he even has prepared a suitcase for his upcoming trip!

Being commissioned and built by the park, Rourke is the physical property of the park and is not permitted off of the premises. He and the other ASPWs were never meant to be capable of contemplating such grandiose subjects as the outside world; they were meant purely for work and were not programmed to be otherwise. Mentioning his desire to leave to his fellow workers earned Rourke little more than raised eyebrows unsupportive commentary. After all, why should he leave? This is what he was made for. This is where he would remain for "life." Having attained a higher level of mind, a stronger sense of self, Rourke knows that the others will never understand; he has since avoided mentioning his desire to leave to them. After closing, he continues to plan for the day he can leave--all the while trying his best to hide his plans. After all, what would happen if the park found out? He did not want to be reprogrammed. It had to remain a secret until that day.
"One day, I'll leave this place... that is my dream. So many of our stories here involve wishes and how they come true in the end. Perhaps, then, so can mine?"
