Grady was happiest whilst running at full speed in a grassy meadow. The soft earth felt good under his paws, the rush of wind was exhilarating and the plethora of smells which barricaded his finely tuned nose never failed to pique his curiosity. Grady was happiest whilst running ... that was, until Grady tried flying.
His interest in flying began one day when he was chasing Grover, the butcher's cat who took great pleasure in teasing Grady. Whilst clambering up boxes in the store room trying to catch the agile feline, they began to slip and the whole stack started to wobble precariously. Rather than be flattened by the toppling tower, Grady leapt blindly forward from his high perch and soared forwards before landing with a heavy thud on a pile of styrofoam packaging. Though his moment of 'flight' had only lasted a mere handful of seconds, it had been a new and exhilarating experience and one which he definitely wanted to prolong and repeat.
Technically it wasn't flying since we all know that dogs can't fly, but to Grady it was close enough and from then on he's been obsessed with the idea! What could be more exciting and liberating than to fly up and away, to look down at the tiny world below and go off and explore intriguing new places? So he set himself the goal that he would be the first dog to fly; now all he needed was a plan.
First, he tried wings. He figured that since birds were masters of flight, attaching some wings to his limbs would enable him to stay up in the air. He crafted lightweight ones out of cardboard and sticky tape but alas these were no good! Flapping his arms not only failed to raise him from the ground but the wings also couldn't keep him in the air when he jumped.
After the failure of the wings, Grady went on to try both flying capes and magic carpets but neither yielded the results he so desperately desired. He was out of ideas and it was only the next day when he was strolling through the park that he stumbled upon his next ingenious plan. A man was selling a variety of balloons, ranging in shape, colour and size. They fascinated Grady for they were floating in the air, prevented from escaping only by the string attached to them. Grady figured that if he gathered enough balloons, then surely they would be able to lift his weight and enable him to fly. At last he had found a winning solution, he thought to himself, now to start collecting them!
To this day, Grady is still working hard gathering his balloons; everyday he brings back a few more to add to his growing collection, hoping that today will be the day that he takes to the skies!
