Born to a mechanic/spare parts shop owner and a homemaker, Nathan and his younger sister Surah by no means had a privileged upbringing. They lived on the outskirts of the Alliance controlled government. His father had once said, it wasn't always this way, that the Alliance grew and expanded their territories so quickly that in a matter of years they threatened to engulf their town. Nathan had a typical childhood, he went to school but didn't do very well. When he was old enough he would go with his father to play card games in the taverns and listen to all the men bicker and argue about how controlling and overpowering the Alliance was.

Having listened to the men gripe for three years, Nathan felt a strong dislike for the Alliance, though he really had very little contact with them. There was talk of the Alliance wanting to gain control os a nearby province, for the sheer fact that it had natural resources that the Alliance wanted to control. Many said it was only a matter of time before the Alliance took their province and town as well. Nathan heard through the grapevine that there were many who opposed the Alliance control, and that they were forming an army to rebel against this control. Nathan immediately signed up.

Though he only received about a year of training, he was passionate and a quick learner. The Independent Rebellion clashed against the alliance in a three year war. During these three gruesome and bloody years Nate lost many friends, and soon found himself sergeant of a brigade. The young Micheal “Rem” Remington became a great friend and support during Nate's command, as he was a brilliant strategist. Rem was by his side for the last two years, surviving many dangerous conflicts with him.

Nate, along with Rem, stood with fifteen other brigades in what was considered by many to be the final decisive battle in the war. The battle was a long and bloody eight weeks, and while not the final battle of the war, was generally considered the end of the war for the Independents, who had lost almost everything. Nate had always said, that if the commanders had listened to Rem's advice, they might have won that battle, even against the superior numbers and technology of the Alliance. In the end, so many sergeants died that Nate found himself leading over 8000 men.

When all but two commanders had been killed(and about 50% of the troops) the Independent High Command officially surrendered to the Alliance. For the next two weeks Nate and his comrades suffered the Alliance while the surrender was being organized. During this time, many more men died, due to starvation, or injuries and lack of medical support after the battle.

Defeated, Nate decided he would return home to gather his belongings, and buy an Air Ship so that he might scratch up a living as a mercenary, far away from the Alliance. He planned to save up money if he could to buy his family a new home further away from the Alliance interface. Rem, decided to join him. When Nate returned home, he was greeted by his younger sister with an overwhelming joy. He learned shortly thereafter that both his mother and his father had died while he was away.

Feeling as though he needed to take care of his sister, he decided he would bring her along with him. It proved to be a very wise choice, as while he was away at war, Surah had become quite the engineer. In a matter of weeks, his little sister had gotten the old, rundown Air Ship that he had bought in brilliant working condition.

Shortly after, Nate found his ship a pilot, the estranged son of an alliance general, Zajac. The four began their new life aboard the IAS Windrunner, and picked up new crew members along the way, taking any jobs they could. - no job was too big, too small, or too illegal, as long as it kept his crew together and his ship flying.
