It's amazing how much can change in just one single day. That was the Joker's point, in a way, but I think we've arrived at completely different outcomes now. He had set out to prove the power of one bad day, sure that it could turn even a perfectly upstanding citizen insane. After all, the Joker himself was once a sane man. But now the villain most certainly is not, and he was determined to prove his point to Batman in a most insane way: by going after Gotham City Police Commissioner James Gordon.
At that point in time, I had been pulling away from my role as Batgirl and was more concerned with my role as Barbara Gordon, the daughter of the Commissioner. That's why I was home that day, that one bad day that began as soon as I answered the knock at our door. Who else was standing there but the Joker himself, looking for my father, ready to escalate the insanity by kidnapping him. Before the Joker could do that, though, he had to deal with me at the door. Then and there, he shot me straight through the spine, rendering me paralyzed in an instant. That was only the beginning of the hellish day for my father. He would go on to endure being stripped and mocked while trapped in a cage at a freak show in an old amusement park. He was shown pictures of me in my new helpless state, in cruel, graphic ways. It is truly a wonder that he did not break down like the Joker wanted him to before Batman came to help save the day. My father, though very shaken, still had complete control of his sanity. But I wasn't so sure that I did. Since that day, I have not been able to stand up, or take a single step, or pick up my old mantle and be Batgirl again. In just that one day, my entire life changed. No longer my happy, cheerful self, I sank into a deep depression. I was beginning to think the Joker had won after all.
That was when I became who I am now: Oracle. I finally realized that, although I could no longer be the kind of superhero that Batgirl was, I could still be a superhero. I just needed to put my other talents to work. Thus, utilizing my brains and my photographic memory, I created an extremely powerful super computer and set to work at gathering information to continue helping Batman and his other allies including Dick Grayson. Richard Grayson: once Robin, now Nightwing. He knew what it was to be a protege of Batman's, and now he too was his own superhero. We had had our differences in the past, but the truth is that we both cared very deeply for each other. Even when apart we were still in each others lives which is why I accepted his proposal today. He's not even here now; he's off trying to save the universe again, and there's no guarantee he'll come back safely. It would only take a single moment of a single day to destroy him and his world; it only took a single moment of a single day to destroy my old world. But it also took only a single moment of a single day to completely change my life for the better.

Wonderful story by Manhattan.
