Brief Background
Ryujinshi was originally a tinkerer from Atebus. After the terrible drama involving rather well-respected mechanics and terrible murder, he decided to move far away and to keep his tinkering more of a secret. He had enjoyed reading and watercolor painting and worked as a delivery man for many shops around Subeta. His favorite drinks were coffee based and he had a rather large sweet tooth.

hen Ryunjinshi was young and human, he won the affection of many women of Subeta. He was kind and just and beautiful. He had many admirers, but his biggest admirer never spoke a word to him. Her name was Hilda, daughter of a witch, and she lurked in the shadows of his life, wishing she could be his wife.

One day, young Ryujinshi had come to terms that he was in love with the beautiful maiden named Solraen. They had started meeting in secret after dark to avoid the hateful glances of his other admirers -- except one. Hilda felt her heart tear apart as she watched them exchange kisses and gifts and sweet words. Through tears and sobs of rage and heartbreak, she muttered a curse she had read in her mother's books. Ryujinshi caressed Solraen's cheek. "I feel faint, suddenly..." she murmured.
"Perhaps we can get some fresher air by the sea." He took her hand and lead her there. Hilda followed.
They held each other and looked out at the moonlight reflecting on the water. Solraen started to breath heavily and then grasped at her throat. Ryujinshi panicked. "Love, what's wrong?" She couldn't speak. She flung herself into the ocean and took a big gulp of seawater. To her dismay, she could breath easily.

Ryujinshi watched as she looked up at him with sadness in her eyes. He knew now they could never be together. She reached up out of the water to him, and he took her hand and kissed it. Relunctantly, he let go and watched as she swam away.

e spent his freetime reading by the sea. He felt there was no way in his power to bring her back, and no one had come forth and confessed to the crime. Every once in a while, he thought he saw something that looked like her, but a mermaid, swimming around in the distance. In his heart, he knew it was her, and he yearned to join her, but his mind knew that that was impossible.

One particularly rainy evening, he read in the library, instead. Without the ocean in his view, his mind wandered. Would she be swimming out in a storm like this? Would it even affect her? Would she even notice? Or perhaps even by now, she had completely forgotten him...?

He couldn't read with his mind erratically throwing questions at him like this. He put his book down and massaged his forehead.

Hilda had conveniently been in the right place at the right time, for she had been conveniently stalking him since the day she cast the curse. She smoothed her dirty clothes and tried to unknot her windblown hair, but to no avail. She was nervous. She didn't know how to talk to him. She walked back and forth, a bookcase away from him, reciting different dialogs to herself. "'So I heard about your girlfriend... How? Oh, well.. I was kind of walking by as it happened. I like to walk at night. Did I see who did it? Uhh... no...' Ugh... 'Oh, my, you look lonely. Why yes, in fact, my girlfriend was just turned into a fish. Oh, that's terrible, let me keep you company!'" She pulled at her hair. "Hilda, you never get anything completely right."

Ryujinshi had walked past the aisle at that moment and turned to her. "Are you alright?" he asked. Hilda gasped and mumbled. It was the first time he had ever acknowledged her, and it was something so kind.
"Um... I'm okay..."
Ryujinshi nodded, unsure of her response. "You seem frazzled. Can I help you?"
"Uh... you look troubled yourself. Surely your problems are worse. Would you... like to... um..." Hilda fell silent. She couldn't well invite him out anywhere. She didn't have money.
Ryujinshi seemed to pick up on this. "Let's go out to eat. I'll pay."

He wasn't interested in Hilda. She seemed rather plain to him. He had realized, however, that living in a constant state of mourning was not a life he wanted. If he wanted to get over his loss, he had to start by distracting himself and learning how to be happy again. It was very obvious the girl had feelings for him, and he hoped it wouldn't break her heart when he inevitably told her he wasn't interested.

"o, Hilda... What do you do?" He put two sugar cubes in his coffee. Hilda watched and mimicked his move.
"I work on a farm, sort of. With my mom."
"Is that all? It must be hard for two women to do all that work. Not that women can't, but you are rather skinny."
She blushed. "Well... we have our ways."
Ryujinshi sighed. She wasn't good at small talk. She must spend all of her time on the farm. "What kind of woman is your mom?"
Her face brightened as she described how strong and beautiful her mom was. She stopped when she saw the look on Ryujinshi's face. "What?"
"Nothing. She just sounds an awful lot like this woman I heard of before... What's her name?"
"Her name... is Rowena."
Ryujinshi's eyes narrowed. Rowena was the name of a rather infamous witch. Suddenly, all of the events had come together. Solraen's transformation, this girl's "coincidental" location, her nervousness... "You took her from me, didn't you."
Hilda almost choked on her coffee. "What?! No, I didn't! Took who, I mean?"
"I never want to see you again. If I do, I will call the guards on you. Good day." He got up and left her with the bill.

Ryujinshi tried to not feel terrible for leaving her like that by justifying his actions as a minor revenge. In fact, her crime was far more sinister than his, but he just couldn't shake the lingering sense of guilt. He was relieved, however, to have never run into her again after that day.

he sun shone on a day when Ryujinshi felt slightly more optimistic about life. It hadn't been very long since his "date" with Hilda, but finding out who had done that to Solraen had relieved him somewhat. He sat up in bed and stretched. In the corner, he noticed a redheaded woman in red and black staring at him. He jumped and his heart raced. He knew it was Rowena. "What are you doing here?! Leave immediately!"

Rowena smiled and shook her head. "You are Ryujinshi," she stated plainly.
"Yes... I am. And you are Rowena."
"So you know a little of me from this town's ignorant lore. Regardless, recognizing me does save a long explanation. Do you know why I'm here?"
"I assume it has to do with Hilda, but I couldn't know what specifically."
"She killed herself because of your cruelty. I'm not blinded by motherly love. I know she was a little too obsessed over you, as a stranger. She was my daughter, though, and I did love her, so you will suffer for eternity." She stood and mumbled arcane words.

Ryujinshi felt parched. His tongue and lips and mouth were all sticking together. He needed water -- lots of it. He couldn't focus on the woman who invaded his home -- she could take it. He jumped out the window and ran to the beach. He scooped the water up and sipped, but it wasn't enough. He jumped in and gulped the water down.

It was now that he realized he jumped at roughly the same point Solraen had. If he looked toward the town, he was looking through the same perspective she had as they parted. His view was not a pleasant one. Rowena stood there, with her arms crossed, looking quite pleased, watching him. He swam away.

ver the next couple of months, he had felt his body change and he became more like a merperson. His fingers and toes became webbed and he grew fins and gills. He figured this to be part of Rowena's curse. He wondered where Solraen was. Perhaps they were never fated to be together, in any form.

By this time, something had started to scare him. There were times when he would black out. He didn't know what happened during these times, but knew deep down that whatever happened was probably terrible. At first he noticed it only happened at night when the moon was fullest, but it became more frequent as more time passed. This must be the final curse -- to perhaps become a beast and do terrible things, the opposite of what he had been before.

He had no idea what he could do. He couldn't survive outside of water, and he hadn't run into any creature underwater that spoke the same language as he had. There was one person he had heard of before, though. Her name was Merana. Perhaps they would meet someday, and he would become enlightened.
